Bernard G. Pfliger, 86, of Hazen, ND passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen under the care of SMC Hospice. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Monday, July 3, 2017 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Hazen with Fr. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bernard was born on April 24, 1931 in rural Stanton, ND, the third youngest of 15 children born to Bernard and Florentina (Heinz) Pfliger. He was raised and educated in rural Stanton and attended college in Wahpeton for a time. He met his wife, Catherine Barnhardt in 1952 and they were married in 1954 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Center, ND. Together they farmed in Stanton until 1957 when they moved to Hazen, where they have since lived. Bernard began working as a carpenter for various contractors and in many locations. He worked for Elder Summer for 28 years building homes and for Shimmin Lumber until 1987 when he retired.

Bernard enjoyed puzzles, watching birds and was an avid squirrel hater. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine of Hazen; five children, Allan (Roberta) of West Fargo, ND, Doug of Minot, ND, Brad (Shannon) of Mandan, ND, Pam Amsden of New Town, ND and Kristi (Todd) Keller of Hazen; eight grandchildren, Thomas (Georgia) Pfliger, Jennifer (Erik) Gronos, Erin (Casey) Baker, Jackson (Crystal) Amsden, Lacey (Troy) Nelson, Alyssa Pfliger, Jessica Pfliger and Hunter Keller; six great-grandchildren, Grady, Sydney, Elijah, Kaydence, Stockton and Baby Amsden; four siblings, Clem Friesz of New Salem, ND, Barbara Oestreich of Hazen, Gertrude Welk of Billings, MT and Ray (Jackie) Pfliger of Bismarck, ND; one brother-in-law, Larry (Donna) Barnhardt of Bismarck and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Barbeda Pfliger, Frances Walter, Agnes Emineth, Marion Thompson, Monica Lang and Idenia Pfliger; and his brothers, Frank, Adam, Tony and Nick; sister-in-law, Irene Beehler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sakakawea Medical Center or SMC Hospice.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
