Darrel Stephens

October 2, 1929 ~ April 13, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

DARREL STEPHENS, 87, of Hazen, went to meet his heavenly Lord on April 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT, Monday, April 17, 2017, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, with Pastor Kirk Peters officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Hazen.

Darrel was born October 2, 1929, the first born son of Victor and Katherine (Fischer) Stephens. He was born and raised in Hazen. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 and was a commissary man.  For most of his service he was stationed aboard the USS Missouri.

On December 22, 1957, he was united in marriage to Ruth Miller and they made their home in Hazen. He worked at the Land O’Lakes creamery in Hazen and Basin Electric in Stanton. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the Chamber of Commerce, and was a volunteer fire chief for four years, all in Hazen. Darrel loved being outdoors and taking long drives in the country admiring God’s beauty. He loved to go deer and pheasant hunting and was an avid fisherman.

He will be deeply missed by his survivors: his wife of 59 years, Ruth of Hazen; three sons, Kevin (Robin) of Sioux Falls, SD, Todd (Robin) of Bismarck, and Jamie (Mandy) Stephens of Mandan; three grandchildren, Mitchell and Tyler, and the little apple of his eye, Mila; two brothers, Fred (Shirley) of Sioux Falls, and David (Sue) Stephens of Mandan.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandson, Theo James, the infant son of Jamie and Mandy.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
