Eleanor Umlauf

September 30, 1932 ~ August 28, 2016 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Eleanor Chase Umlauf, “Maatasanak Miihe” (Short River Woman), crossed over on August 28, 2016. She passed peacefully at Sanford Medical Health in Bismarck, North Dakota. Visitation will be held at 8:30 AM CDT with the service starting at 10:00 AM CDT on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Barbot Funeral Home in Beulah, North Dakota with Pastor Daniel Sansot officiating. The burial ceremony will follow in the Beulah City Cemetery.

Born in Red Butte, North Dakota on September 30, 1932, Eleanor was one of three children of Cloud Chase and Viola Keller. She was a child of the Water Buster Clan through the adoption of her father by his stepfather, Phillip Snow of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Tribes.

Her early years were spent in Red Butte, North Dakota, Beulah, North Dakota and Albany, Oregon. She went to theological college where she met her first husband, Ladson Ouzts. They became missionaries of the Church of God and after preaching for a few years in Albany, Oregon she moved to Ketchikan, Alaska as a missionary to further their ministry. When a permanent pastor was found, they moved back to Albany in 1957, to raise their small and new family and continue their ministry.

In 1960, she moved her family to Fairbanks, Alaska where she began working for the State of Alaska. She became heavily involved with the Alaskan Native community doing charity work and serving on multiple community organizations.

In 1966, she divorced. Still working for the State of Alaska, she moved to Juneau, Alaska’s capitol, where she met John Umlauf. They married in 1976.

When she retired, she moved back to Albany, Oregon to her perfect home that had a pond and orchard. 2001 brought her and John back to live in Beulah, where she could be close to her roots.

She was an amazing, caring, beautiful person who touched many lives throughout her lifetime. She lived a full 83 years.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Debra McClung, son-in-law, Stephen McClung, her grandchildren, Kelson McClung and Stephanie McClung, brother, Charles Chase, sons, John, Mark, Robert and Roy Umlauf, sister Frances Black Tail Deer, as well as other numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cloud and Viola Chase, her son, David Ouzts, her brothers, Marvin Chase, Valery Scott Chase, Richard James Chase “Jimmy” and Cloud Alfred Chase Jr. “Freddy” and sister, Annette Chase-Porter.
