March 3, 1926 ~ February 6, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

ELSIE M. QUAST, 90, of Mandan, formerly of Golden Valley, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, at Sanford Health Systems, Bismarck, ND.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST, Friday, February 10, 2017, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, ND, with Pastor Lee Herberg officiating.  Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Rural Mandan.  Visitation will be on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, ND.

Elsie was born on March 3, 1926, on the family farm south of Golden Valley to Rudolph and Helena (Kruckenberg) Hinsz.  She was baptized and confirmed at Golgotha Lutheran Church in Golden Valley.  Elsie graduated from the eighth grade and in her early years she worked as a clerk at Nick Huck grocery and Hanewald and Weigum in Golden Valley.  She also worked one year at Sears in Bismarck.  On December 2, 1945, she married Hilmer Quast at Golgotha Lutheran Chruch.  Elsie and Hilmer owned and operated the Valley Bar in Golden Valley for 43 years.  They met and knew a lot of friends and people there over the years.

Elsie was the organist for 30 years for the German service at the Golgotha Church.  She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and cantata, and was a member of the German Ladies Aid.

Elsie was a good cook and baker, liked to play pinochle and other card games, can fruits, vegetables and meats, and embroidered.  Hilmer passed away in 2001, and in April 2005, she moved into Library Square in Mandan.  She made some great new friends there.  While in Mandan, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren, Miranda play tennis and Michael and Jared play baseball, and their other activities. 

            Elsie is survived by her son, Douglas (Bonnie) of Mandan; grandchildren, Miranda (Jared) Myers of Fargo, Michael (Michaela) of Rochester, MN, Jared of Fargo; great-grandson, Blake Myers, whom she adored; sister, Mardella Meske of Mandan; sister-in-law, Corinne Quast of Golden Valley; numerous nieces and nephews; Elsie was looking forward to seeing the birth of her great-granddaughter in May.

            She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilmer; her parents; brothers, Herbert and Emil; and her sister, Edna Flemmer.
