Enid Haas Stroup, 95, died peacefully on Monday, September 18, 2017, at Knife River Care Center, Beulah, ND. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM CDT on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at English Lutheran Church, Hazen, ND, with Pastor Bill Wagner officiating. Burial will follow at the Hazen City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 PM CDT on Friday, September 22, 2017, at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen.

Enid Haas Stroup was born November 13, 1921, in Hazen, ND, to Fred and Alice (Thomas) Haas. She lived in Hazen nearly all her life, graduating from Hazen High School in 1939. Her parents owned the local theater which also served as a dance hall, and she enjoyed many dances there, including to the music of Lawrence Welk.

She served as a secretary to John Moses for a time until she married George M. Stroup at English Lutheran Church on December 28, 1941. After the war, they made their home in Hazen, where George worked at the Union State Bank. They raised two children, Kathy and Charles.

Enid served in many ways as a local volunteer. She helped with Girl Scouts and served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She used her secretarial skills as church secretary at English Lutheran Church, as well as helping with the North Dakota Historical Society. She was active in the Eastern Star and the Hazen Hospital Auxiliary where she would help plan and execute programs for special occasions.

She enjoyed golf and was very active in helping create the golf course Hazen has today by helping clear out bushes—to the point that she had to be hospitalized for poison ivy. Tennis was another favorite, and she generously helped fund the tennis courts Hazen has today. She enjoyed playing bridge, both in a couples club and women’s groups.

Music highlighted her life, and she used her alto voice to sing in the church choir and Knife River Chorale for many years. She also would frequently sing in women’s groups for special events.

She and George enjoyed many winters as snowbirds in Mesa, Arizona, where they reconnected with many Hazen friends.

Enid is survived by her two children, Kathy (Harvey) Huber of Hazen, Charles (Shari) Stroup of Hazen, ND, and Port Townsend, WA; five grandchildren, Callie (John) Meehan of Westport, CT, Christie (Jerry) Obenauer of Hazen, ND, Stephanie Huber (Jason Obenauer), Hazen, ND, Seth Stroup, Aberdeen, SD, and Noah (Nicole) Stroup of Tigard, OR. She also leaves great-grandchildren Grace, Claire, and Peter Meehan, Isaak, Kordon and Elle Obenauer, Juno, Bohdan, Magnus, and Rohan Obenauer, Kale, Jonah, Reiah, and Sarah Stroup. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; one sister, Lula (Larry) McCampbell; one brother Wilfred (Phyllis) Haas; and in-laws, Robert (Lillian/Vi) Stroup, Wayne (Bernice) Stroup, and Margaret Jean (Jim) Leet.
