Luella was born on April 12, 1933 to Leo and Pauline (Oster) Wolf on their farm 11 ½ miles northwest of Hazen. She joined big sister Leona. In 1944, the family moved to Halliday where she helped in her parents’ store, Hanewald and Weigum Grocery and Clothing Store. Luella graduated from Halliday High School in 1952. Upon graduation, she moved to Bismarck where she worked at the food counter in Woolworths. Later, she moved back to Halliday and helped her brother-in-law at a grocery/clothing store in Killdeer.

While swimming at the Halliday Dam one day, Sig asked seventeen-year-old Luella to go to the movies. Thus was the start of a beautiful relationship. They were engaged one year later and were married on October 23, 1953. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this fall. Their mutual love, respect, and commitment is evident and inspiring to all who know them.

Following their marriage, the couple lived with Sig’s folks for a short time and then rented the John and Helen Grinnell ranch several miles to the north of the family farm. In 1956, Sig and Luella purchased the family farm where they continued to farm, ranch, and raise their family of two girls and five boys.

Throughout the years, Luella served a number of years on the election board, helped with FHA and Luther League activities and enjoyed other hobbies including reading, crafts, bingo and playing pinochle in the card club.

Luella and Sig were members of the Halliday Saddle Club, during which time they co-owned roping steers which they hauled to various roping events. One of Luella’s most enjoyable hobbies was square dancing. Sig and Luella were on the organizing committee that founded the Sagebrush Jamboree in Medora in 1964. Sig’s square dance calling enabled them to travel and meet many new friends.

In 1992, Sig and Luella moved into Halliday. Her days there were kept busy with cooking and housekeeping due to frequent visits from children and grandchildren, attending all her grandchildren’s events, and with various craft projects. Family members received many treasured handmade Christmas ornaments, dishtowels, pillowcases, and hand-beaded bracelets and necklaces, among other creations.

Luella was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Halliday where she taught Sunday school and Bible School and served on work committees. In later years, she also attended church at Living Word Fellowship in Dickinson.

Luella was blessed with many different gifts and talents, but one that consistently stood out was her natural ability to be a blessing to others. She effortlessly radiated love. With her warmth, quick dimpled smile, and gentle spirit, she made everyone feel treasured. And as she consistently put others first, she became first in their hearts as well. Each family member felt like we shared a special, unique bond with her- and rightly so. The ability to convey love to each individual this way in a family so large is a rare gift, indeed. It is a gift that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives until we meet again in Heaven.

Luella is survived by her loving husband, Sig; daughter Deborah (Jim) Allmendinger of Hazen, with grandkids Chad, Will (Kayla), and Elizabeth; daughter Barbara (Marc) Fridley of Taylor, with grandkids Marcia and Marcus; son Tim (Julie) of Grassy Butte, with grandkids Nathan, Hailey (Rusty) Christophersen, Leighton, and Codi; son Jim (Lynn) of Halliday, with grandkids Zanna (Karter) Kleeman (great-granddaughters Tenley and Berkley), Ashley, Skye, and Logan; son Mark (Melanie) of Halliday, with grandkids Shannea, Emelie, Sarah, Matthew, and Samantha; son Paul (Tami) Schaper of Taylor, with grandkids Kaci (Jordan) Hjelle and Dylan (Stevie) Schaper; son John Schaper of Halliday with granddaughter Brittany (Kaleb) Anderson (great-grandkids Charlee and Lincoln); sisters-in-law Mae Teske, Gertie Retzer, Vera (Bob) Barfield, Clara (Elmer) Goetz, Orlene Schaper, and Darlene Schaper; brother-in-law Willie (Della) Schaper and numerous nieces and nephews.
