Melvin J. Maas

November 22, 1929 ~ January 3, 2018 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Melvin John Maas, 88, of Hazen, died Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at the Hilltop Home of Comfort, Killdeer, ND.  Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 8, 2018, at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen, with Pastor Kirk Peters officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Hazen.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday.

            Melvin was born November 22, 1929, southeast of Hazen, the firstborn son of Rudolf & Freida (Uhl) Maas. He attended the Pleasant Valley Country Grade School and continued his education at the Hazen High School and Stanton High School.  After graduation, he taught at a country school northwest of Stanton for one year.  Melvin then continued running the family farm and his own heavy equipment construction business building dams and waterways for area farmers for several years.  Melvin married Harriet (Baier) Maas on April 22, 1962 and both continued farming south of Hazen and operating Maas Construction.  Melvin and Harriet had three children, Sherry, Robyn and Kelly. He later married Lori Benston and had one daughter, Keri Ann.

            Melvin was known to be a very hard worker and had to be busy doing something all the time.  He was a “jack-of-all-trades”.  He loved to tinker in the shop on motors, etc. He remodeled several homes in Hazen for rentals. He had a lake home on Lake Sakakawea and enjoyed traveling, especially out west to relatives in Montana, Washington and Oregon. 

            Melvin is survived by one son, Kelly (Steph) Maas of Hazen; two daughters, Robyn (Scott) Miller of Beulah; and Keri Ann Maas of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Jenna (Zane) Miller of Bismarck, Michael Maas of Fargo, Samantha & Tryston Miller of Beulah; two brothers, Dallas (Loretta) and Myron (Bonnie) both of Hazen; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, a stillborn daughter, Melanie JoAnn, and one daughter, Sherry Lyn.

            Arrangements conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen and Beulah.
