Alvina Cahoon Obituary

Alvina Magdalena (Wallender) Cahoon, 97, of Hazen, ND passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Salem United Methodist Church, Hazen, ND, with Pastor Cory Thrall officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Hazen City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM CDT on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen.

Alvina was born on April 8, 1920 to William and Magdalena (Schweigert) Wallender on the Wallender farm 14 ½ miles south of Beulah. She was one of seven children born to William and Magdalena. Alvina attended country school south of Beulah and assisted with the production of the family farm. When she was 19, her life adventure began and she moved into Beulah and worked at the Saxton’s Hotel. Alvina married Orville C. Cahoon on November 22, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. The couple had four children, Peggy, DeLon, Irene and Dennis. Alvina and Orville bought a farm south of Hazen in Oliver County and once again, Alvina assisted with the production of their farm while loving and nurturing their four children.

In 1972, Alvina started work at the Hazen Memorial Hospital, first in housekeeping and then as a laundry supervisor until she retired in 1985. As Orville’s health declined, they could no longer remain on their farm. In 1989, Alvina and Orville moved into Mercer County Housing in Hazen. Orville passed shortly after this move and Alvina continued to live in Hazen until April 2009 when she entered Knife River Care Center. She lived there until she met her Lord and Savior. Alvina had a strong faith and connection with her Lord. It was important to her that the kids were baptized and confirmed and attended church. Her kids and grandkids always said their mom and grandma had a direct line to the Lord and they would ask her to pray for them, to which her response was always “I Do and I Will”.

Alvina talked about having this inner peace, which her family now knows she was talking about peace with God. The gates of Heaven opened up and she went with the angels to her Lord and Savior!

Alvina is survived by her four children, Peggy (Cahoon) McClure of Lochbuie, CO, DeLon (Julie) Cahoon of Arthur, ND, Irene (Marvin) Richter and Dennis (Sue) Cahoon all of Hazen; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Wallender of Beulah, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; her parents, William and Magdalena; her brothers, Art, Herb (Sophie) and Bill (Hildegard); and her sisters, Bertha (Kris) Klaut and Hella (Fred) Flemmer.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
