Calvin Buechler Obituary

Calvin Buechler, 85, of Golden Valley, ND went home to Heaven on Sunday, July 22, 2018. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Prairie View Church of God, Beulah with Pastor Aaron Malsbury officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Calvin was born September 5th, 1932 to Herbert and Martha (Boeckel) Buechler on his paternal grandparents' farm, 10 miles north of Zap, N.D.  The family moved a number of times and when he was about 12 settled on a farm eight miles north of Zap.  He graduated from the eighth grade but was not able to get further formal education.  But he was a life-long student, always reading and always learning.

He met Caroline Walz at their country school and it was love at first race.  They were married May 30th, 1952 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Beulah.  They lived on the same farm as his parents and farmed with them.  In 1960 they purchased the Clarence Bauer farm 11 miles north of Golden Valley.  They raised grain crops and made tons and tons of hay for their beef cattle and Caroline's dairy herd.  But Calvin said his five kids were the best crop he ever raised!  They farmed there for about 50 years.  He had always wanted to be a world traveler but spent most of his life four miles from where he was born.

It wasn't all work.  They enjoyed visiting the neighbors, attending their children's activities, going to the lake, and riding horse.  He spent hours playing guitar and singing, usually while the girls did the supper dishes.  He said he was helping by "entertaining" them.  Once the kids were on their own they made many trips to visit them and all the grandkids and then great-grandkids that joined the family.  They took a few vacations in their later years.  The best one was getting to go to the Grand Ole Opry.

Because of his great love for his God, Calvin was very active at the Church of God in Beulah - serving on the church council, as Sunday School Superintendent, playing guitar and singing in the choir, and decades teaching Sunday school.  He was on several ASCS committees, the Golden Valley School Board, and the Zap Volunteer Fire Department.  They were awarded the Mercer County Soil Conservation Award in 1995.

When Caroline moved into the Knife River Care Center in Beulah, he remained on the farm until he joined her in August of 2016.  They later moved to the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck to be closer to family.  Caroline went to be with the Lord after 65 years of marriage in August of 2017.  Calvin then went to live with Roger, Jing, and family.  After 11 long months he joined her in heaven.  Now they are rejoicing in the presence of the Lord!

Calvin is survived by his children:  Vandra (Dennis) Elliott-Peterson, Lemmon, SD; Roger (Virginia) Buechler, Bismarck, ND;  Monica (Errol) Wolff, West Fargo, ND; Marva (John) Harding, Mankato, MN; Joni (Jeremy) Buechler-Price, Casselton, ND; 12 grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren and one on the way, sister Virginia (Lester) Schramm, Bismarck, ND; brother Larry (Charlene) Buechler, Bismarck, ND.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Wilhelm and Anna (Rabenberg) Walz, one son-in-law Darrell Elliott, and two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law Ruth and August Helm and Gladys and Clarence Breitling.
