Carrol Harn

Carrol G. Harn, 73, of rural Hazen, ND, passed away January 7, 2020 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM CST on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Bill Wagner and Pastor Mark Martin officiating.  A celebration of life and reception are to follow at Stanton Civic Center, Stanton, ND. 

Carrol was born on October 29, 1946 in Kadoka, SD, the son of Wade H. and Fern (Kennedy) Harn.  He was raised on the family farm near Long Valley, SD and graduated from Kadoka High School where he was active in the Kadoka Rodeo Club & football.  For several consecutive years Carrol was a regional and state Golden Gloves High School Boxing Champion.  Prior to attending college the bright lights of Hollywood called and Carrol was hired as a cowboy wrangler and extra in the documentary “Born to Buck” created by rodeo legend Casey Tibbs. He also worked as a groom on the Ak-Sar-Ben Horse Racetrack in Omaha, Nebraska.  He then attended the National College of Business in Rapid City, SD on a rodeo scholarship and earned his Associate’s degree in Accounting.

While attending a college rodeo team practice Carrol met the love of his life, Delva Froshaug.  They were united in marriage June 15, 1968 at First Lutheran Church in Charlson, ND. 

Carrol worked as a ranch hand at the Barber Ranch in Long Valley, SD.  On November 18, 1969,  Carrol & Delva’s first son, Carrol Wade, was born.  He then worked as an accountant for Big D Oil Company in Rapid City, SD.  While living in SD, Carrol participated in the South Dakota Rodeo Association and was the 1970 SDRA Finals Bull Riding Champion.  Carrol and Delva then moved back to Kadoka where he worked at the local hardware store as a clerk and performed small engine repair.  On October 1, 1972 the Harn’s welcomed their second son, Darrel Boyde.  Carrol also served as a part time deputy for the city of Kadoka in 1973 during the Wounded Knee Uprising.

The Harn’s then moved to Mandan where Carrol worked as a ranch hand for the Wachter Horse Ranch.  He also worked as a welder at the Melroe manufacturing plant in Bismarck, ND and served as a union steward.  Carrol joined Iron Workers Local 793 and assisted in the construction of the power plants in Mercer County, which lead to the family moving to the Hazen area.  Carrol was proud if his iron work and often commented on the large construction projects he was part of such as the Milwaukee Brewers baseball stadium, the Minneapolis-St.

Paul airport, and the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame.  In between iron work assignments he worked for the Mercer county highway department and attended Oklahoma Horseshoeing School.  Carrol had his own business as a local farrier for many years.  He continued to work as an iron worker for the next 25 years and retired in 2001. 

Carrol was an active member in the following organizations:  Cub Scouts leader, Wrangler and Twin Rivers Saddle Clubs, NDRA, SDRA, Roughrider Rodeo Association, and judge of local bull ridings and Junior rodeos.  Carrol enjoyed team roping, camping, trail riding, traveling with family, deer and elk hunting, fulfilling a lifelong dream of roping at the USTRC in Oklahoma, creating metal and horseshoe art with his wife, and talking NDSU Bison football with his “daughter” Karrie.  When he wasn’t on a horse Carrol could be found reading a western novel, playing Sudoko, or a game of Solitaire on his phone.  Carrol was often considered as a second father to many extended family members and friends.  He was a man who could strike up a conversation with anyone who was willing to listen and share a good story over a cold one.

Carrol is survived by his wife of 51 years, Delva; his son and daughter-in-law Wade & Karrie; and son Darrel; his brother and sister-in-law, Jerry & Sally; brothers, Joe and Gail; in-laws Cheri Frye, and Vickie & Joe Fitzgerald; and many nieces & nephews. 

Carrol was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Maxine, Ethel, and Roy; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Boyde & Clara Froshaug; and brothers-in-law, Charlie Fowler Eldon Frye.
