Clara Mattheis

CLARA MATTHEIS, 96, of Hazen, died Sunday, June 10, 2018, at the Missouri Slope Care Center, Bismarck.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT, Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating.  Burial will follow at the Beulah City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Clara (Scheid) Mattheis was born northwest of Hazen, North Dakota, on February 10, 1922, to Robert and Emilia (Wiedrich) Scheid. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and educated at a rural school near the farm where she was raised. She worked for a number of families in the Hazen area until she found her lifelong career as a nurse’s aide, working at hospitals in Beulah and Hazen. She took a short break from this career when she married Oswald Mattheis on October 17, 1950 in Hazen. Once her children were born, she returned to work at the hospital in Hazen until her retirement almost 50 years later.

Oswald and Clara enjoyed 53 years of marriage before Oswald died in 2004. As a farm couple, their lives were filled with the hard work of growing crops, milking cows and raising any number and variety of farm animals. Leisure time was always spent together. Playing cards, visiting family members, camping, fishing and taking vacation trips provided rest and rejuvenation after the work was done. She often advised others to never put off opportunities to “do things while you can” as these made wonderful memories. Clara particularly liked to knit and crochet, and these occupied her hands when the work was finished. A cup of coffee was always sitting nearby. Blessed with a wonderful memory, she loved to share stories of her many adventures with anyone who would listen. She was known for her wit and humor, often making shocking comments to get others to laugh.

Clara is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws and their children and grandchildren: Jim and Gloria, Bismarck, ND, Michael, Jason and Mary and Freya, Amy and Leif Anderson and Eleanor; Timothy and Brenda, Hazen, ND, Patrick and Kayla and Mitchell and Rose, and Emily and Rusty Klabunde and Logan and Ethan; daughter and son-in-law and their children and grandchildren: Debbie and Wayne Rahn, Hazen, ND, Brad and Jessica Richter and Mason, Riley and Haiden, Jody and Chris Saxton and Kalista, Ava, and Ella.
 

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Herbert, Eddie, Walter and Bennie Scheid; two sisters, Esther Schwarz and Alma Mattheis, one granddaughter, Kristen Rahn and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
