Herbert Hintz Obituary

Herbert Fredrick Hintz, 88, of Hazen, ND, was called Home July 27, 2018 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen. He will forever remain in his family’s hearts. Services will be held at 2:00 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will follow at the Hazen City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen.

Herbert was born on June 8, 1930 to August and Mary (Franz) Hintz in Waterloo, New York. A few years later, the family moved to a farm south of Hazen. He attended a rural school and helped his dad on the farm. As a young man, one of his memories was working on the threshing crew. At the end of the day, the older men would go inside to eat and Herbert and the younger boys would have to tend to the horses before they were able to eat.

On November 25, 1955, Herbert married the love of his life, Betty Mattheis at Peace Lutheran Church. Immediately after they were married, the couple moved to Herbert’s parent’s farm and received a snow storm for their honeymoon. Herbert and Betty had money from the shoe but no food to eat. Coming to their rescue was Herbert’s older brother, Emil. He brought them two loaves of delicious, homemade bread, baked by Emil’s wife, Norma. In 1957, they purchased their own farmstead where they farmed, ranched and raised their three sons, Steven, Kevin and Kelly. In 1991, Herbert and Betty purchased a home in Hazen but Herbert continued to farm until his retirement in 1997.

Throughout the years, Herbert was active in the church council and was a church deacon. Herbert and Betty were always very busy visiting friends and family, taking care of the grandchildren, and enjoying and attending all their activities and sporting events. They also enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center. Herbert and Betty also spent many hours at the coffee shop with the gang having coffee.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty of Hazen; three sons, Steven (Stacy) Hintz, Kevin (Traci) Hintz and Kelly (Ruby) Hintz, all of Hazen; seven grandchildren, Shannon (Dakota) Wettstein, Alicia Aune (Casey Zingg), Austin Hintz, Kourtney Hintz and Abby Hintz, all of Hazen, Karson Hintz (Angie Schumacher) of Beulah and  Tyler Aune of Bismarck; two great-grandchildren, Trevor and Anastasia Zingg of Hazen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Emma Hintz and Hulda Kruckenberg; and one brother, Emil Hintz.

Arrangements conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
