Dr. James Albert Zeller, age 76, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2019 in Stockton, CA with family members by his side after complications from coronary bypass surgery.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Monday, October 28, 2019 at Barbot Funeral Chapel, Beulah, ND with Pastor Kent Sperry officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, north of Beulah.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date in Stockton.
James was born December 16, 1942 in Beulah, North Dakota to Albert and Rufina (Mettler) Zeller.
James graduated from Beulah High School and received his BA degree from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Stanford University in California and his PhD in German Languages and Literature from the University of California, Davis, California.
He taught college at San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, California for 49 years. He once said, “Unlocking the minds of students is my second paycheck”. Throughout his career he taught World Religion, Civilization, Humanities, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Film, English as well as German. Over the years he traveled extensively visiting over 20 countries and hoped to continue traveling to learn and experience more.
He is survived by a son, Wade (Lynn); life-time friend/former-wife, Juanita; four grandchildren, Kurt, Scott, Ellie and Collin; two brothers, Jerry and Craig (Robin); and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son Vance, his parents and a brother Billy.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
