James "Jim" Rahn Obituary

James “Jim” Emil Rahn, 74, of Hazen, ND passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at St. Martin Catholic Church, Hazen with Fr. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Jim was born on March 6, 1944 in Hazen to Herman and Viola (Reinhardt) Rahn. He was the oldest of eight children. Jim grew up and attended school near Hazen and also attended Hazen High School. He married Mary Schwab on June 27, 1969 at St. Martin Catholic Church. Jim was employed with Cenex and Hazen Motors for a time before beginning his career with Basin Electric at Leland Old’s Station. Jim and Mary bought Mary’s family’s farm south of Hazen in 1973, where Jim also farmed until retirement.

Jim served on the St. Martin Catholic Church Council for many years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the IBEW Local 1593 and spent 31 years as director for the Stanton Rural Fire Protection District.

Jim greatly enjoyed traveling to Laughlin, NV with Mary to do some gambling and enjoy the warmer weather. He also liked to go fishing and spent time woodworking. Above all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his four grandsons.

Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary of Hazen; three children, Melanie (Kiley) Yates of Paulina, IA, Marcia (Steve) Vibeto of Minot, ND and Jesse (Glynda) Rahn of Rapid City, SD; four grandsons, Johnathon Gray, Grayson and Breylon Rahn and Keene Vibeto; three brothers, John (Peg “Schwab”) Rahn and Elmer Rahn, all of Hazen and Allen (Pam) Rahn of Wasilla, AK; four sisters, Janice Scheurer of Walhalla, ND, Judy (Greg) Hyttinen of Hensler, ND, Donna (Don) Reichenberg of Hazen and June (Mike) Benedict of Bismarck, ND; eight brothers-in-law, Jim (Judy) Schwab of Hannover, ND, Mark (Deb) Schwab of Beulah, ND, Dan (Bonnie) Schwab of Gillette, WY, Mike (Gayl) Schwab of West Jordan, UT, Jack (Jackie) Schwab, Dave (Donna) Schwab, Rick Schwab and Tom (Renee) Schwab, all of Hazen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, John and Doris Schwab; and his brother-in-law, Charles Schwab.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
