Leona A (Lindemann) Brecht

Leona A. Brecht, 92, of Golden Valley, ND died Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 10:30 AM CDT on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, with Pastor Tom Olson officiating. Burial will follow at Golgotha Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT on Thursday at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Leona was born on November 22, 1926 to John and Lydia (Loewe) Lindemann. She was raised and educated five miles north of Golden Valley and graduated from Golden Valley High School in 1944. Leona then attended college at Dickinson State College, where she received her teaching degree. She taught in various country schools and also taught for many years at the Golden Valley Public School.

Leona married Deen A. Brecht in July 1948. In 1956, the couple moved to the August Brecht farm (Sickle Horseshoe Ranch) where they raised their four children. Deen passed away in 1982. Leona continued to live there and operate the ranch until March 27, 2019 when she suffered from a stroke and moved to Knife River Care Center.

Leona was a member of Golgotha Lutheran Church, often read scripture during services on Sunday and was involved with quilting. She was also involved in the Germans from Russia, the Dodge Saddle Club and the Sunshine Club. Leona greatly enjoyed using the old German methods for determining weather patterns. She cared for many animals on the farm and also sold cream and eggs for years to the communities of Golden Valley, Dodge, Zap and Beulah. Leona attended car races all over the area to watch her sons and grandsons race and could also be found at demolition derbies. She was faithful about calling in birthday greetings to KFYR radio, trying to make everyone’s day special.

Leona is survived by her sons, Deen (Darlene), Daniel and Lee, all of Golden Valley; her son-in-law, Myron Stern of Hazen; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Lydia Brecht of High River, Alberta, Canada, Marion Brecht of Beulah, Eleanor Lindemann of Golden Valley and Elinore Brecht of Stockton, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Deen; her daughter, Bonita; one sister, Hilda Backfish; and two brothers, Rudolph Lindemann and William Lindemann.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
