Marilyn Melchior Obituary

Marilyn K Melchior, 75, Hazen, died peacefully with her family at her side on Tuesday, March 20 2018 at Sakakawea Medical Center under the care of Hospice.  Services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church at 10:00 am Friday, March 23, 2018 with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating.  There will be a visitation at Barbot Funeral Home in Hazen from 5:00-7:00pm Thursday, March 22 2018.  Burial will take place at a later date.

Marilyn was born March 15, 1943 in Minot, ND to Royal and Marvel Kempf, the oldest of three surviving children.  The Kempf family resided in Tolley for a number of years. Marilyn was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran in Garrison, ND.  When Marilyn was a freshman in high school, the family moved to McClusky, ND where she graduated high school in 1961.  She attended the Man Power Program initiated by President Kennedy at Minot State College.  In 1964, Marilyn married Donald Wenning of McClusky.  Together, they worked on the Wenning family farm.  They added two children to their union – Dawn and Jim.  Marilyn moved to Mercer County in 1982.  She was a CPR driver for the Mercer County Ambulance and was a seamstress by trade.  She taught herself to sew while on the farm!  Marilyn made many wedding, prom, and baptism dresses, western shirts and chaps and lots of doll clothes.  She loved to sew for her children and grandchildren.  Marilyn has done alterations for many people in the area. She spent much of her free time crocheting, knitting, embroidering, and counted cross stitching and had made many sweaters and afghans for family and friends.  Marilyn loved to read and was active in her church, Peace Lutheran (in bible studies and was on church council.)   She made many prayer shawls to be given to those who needed them.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Paul) Sayler of Hazen; her son, Jim (Darcee) Wenning of Beulah; seven grandchildren, Amanda Palmer, Chris (Kayla) Palmer, Lacey Wenning, Sierra (Morgan) Vasilakes, Katie Palmer (Chansey Jewell), Emily Wenning , Anna Wenning; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Palmer, one sister, Jackie (Bill) Krumwiede, one brother, Tom (Val) Kempf; her “Sister of the heart”, Colleen Jacobsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and baby sister, Julie Ann.
