Norman Richau

Norman Richau, 93, of Golden Valley, ND passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah due to complications with Alzheimers. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley with Pastor Kevin Hall officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, December 20 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Norman was born on September 24, 1926 to Matt and Pauline (Janke) Richau, on the family farm north of Golden Valley. Norman lived on the farm his entire life until 2013 when he and his wife, Pauline, moved to Beulah. In 2014, he moved to the Knife River Care Center where he lived until his passing.

Norman was baptized and confirmed at Golgotha Lutheran Church. He attended rural school until the eighth grade. In his younger years, Norman enjoyed raising pheasants. He also loved to draw until a teacher accused him of tracing an image and he chose not to draw anymore. On September 18, 1949, Norman and his brother, Alvin married sisters, Irene and Pauline Raszler of Beulah. Norman and Pauline were married for 66 years. Norman and Pauline lived and worked on the family farm until retirement. When they retired, they still planted a large garden, which grew a little every year.

Norman was a welder, learning to weld from a cousin. He preferred welding to woodworking because he said if he cut iron to shorten it, he could always weld a piece back on. Norman made numerous pieces of farm equipment without blue prints.  He was also a fixer, everything had to work perfectly.

Norman enjoyed putting picture puzzles together, shooting pool and dancing. He was a charter member of the Beulah Eagles club.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara of Beulah; one sister-in-law, Laura Gutsche of Colorado; his special grandson, Scott Dittel of Williston, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline; his step-mother; his brothers, John, Arnold, Walter and Alvin; his sisters, Irene Heuer and Violet Wagner; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
