Pauline Koehler Obituary

Pauline (Benz) Koehler, 93, of Hazen, ND passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Kirk Peters officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT on Wednesday at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen.

Pauline was born north of Hazen on June 10, 1925. She was the ninth of 10 children born to Mathias and Rosina (Morast) Benz. Pauline was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, north of Hazen. She was raised and educated north of Hazen and graduated from Hazen High School on May 28, 1943. Following graduation Pauline went on to teach for a short time. She married Otto Koehler on July 20, 1945 at St. Peter’s parsonage by Pastor Peter. Together, the couple lived and farmed south of Hazen.

Pauline enjoyed quilting, embroidering, counted cross stitch, crossword puzzles, reading, baking and gardening. She was a big Minnesota Twins fan.

Pauline is survived by three daughters, Deniece (Mike) Sailer of Cando, ND,  Margo (Leland) Saele of Vancouver, WA, and Rhonda Koehler of Hazen; one son, John (Mary) Koehler of Coon Rapids, MN; 10 grandchildren, Nichole (Tim) Fritel, Justin (Sabrina) Sailer, Lance Sailer, Brock Sailer, Loren Saele, Carmen (Jason) Kardokus, Derek (Andrea) Saele, Anna Koehler, Heidi Koehler and Lane Koehler; nine great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Helmuth Pfennig of Beulah; one sister-in-law, Esther Koehler of Beulah; and many, very special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; one infant daughter; her parents, Mathias and Rosina; and nine siblings, Herbert Benz, Friedebert (Emma) Benz, Erhardt (Hilda) Benz, Henry Benz, Julius Benz, Lydia (Gottlieb) Hilz, Martha (Emil) Reich, Rose Benz and Lea Pfennig.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Anne Carlsen Center, Jamestown, ND and Hazen Hospice, Hazen, ND.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
