Albert John Wallender

Albert John Wallender, 97, Beulah, died on August 1, 2019, at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 1:00 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Mary Lou Aune officiating. Burial will follow in the Beulah City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 6, at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Albert was born April 30, 1922, the youngest of seven children to William and Magdalene (Schweigert) Wallender. He was raised and educated on the family farm south of Beulah, graduating from Beulah High School in 1942. Albert was baptized on June 18, 1922 and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on April 5, 1936.

 On April 26, 1944, he was united in marriage to Esther Bates in Beulah.

On June 1, 1944, Albert entered the US Navy as a radio operator on the USS Enterprise. He was honorably discharged on January 21, 1946. Following his discharge, he went to work for the US Postal Service from which he retired in 1977. After retirement he enjoyed a variety of other jobs. He treasured the idea that he was retired longer than he worked.

Albert was a long-standing member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving in a variety of capacities throughout his life. He and Esther were avid Beulah Miner fans; he was a golfer, fisherman, and enjoyed camping and spending time at the lake. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Albert is survived by his children, Brenda (Carl) Burchill, Brent (Janis), Beth (Randy) Zimmerman all of Beulah and his daughter-in-law, Lora of Hazen; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, Corey (Paula) Burchill, Erik, Carl, Ingrid, Poulsbo, WA; Casey (Maggie) Burchill, Reese, Silas, Las Vegas, NV; Amanda (Marc) Zale, Tommy, Chicago, IL; Kelcey (Grant), Chugiak, AK; Kylie (John), Fargo; Karlee (Colin), Portland, OR; Hilary (Demetri) Zimmerman-Morgan, Zoey, Chicago, IL; Hannah (Marshall) Krebs, Emmitt, Watford City; Heidi (Lex) Tande, Powers Lake; Phil (Jen), Caleb, Garret, Presley, Hazen; and Paul (Rachel), Billings, MT. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and special friend Rita (Jeff) Baranick, Beulah.

Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; son, Brian; grandson, Chad Burchill; his parents; three sisters, Hella, Bertha and Alvina; and three brothers, Art, Herb and William, Jr.

The family requests memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church or a memorial of your choice.
