Alice J. Battest of Beulah passed away December 3, 2021 at Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen, after a valiant fight with cancer. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 10, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beulah, at 10:00 am (CT) with Father Joseph Evinger officiating. Burial will follow at the Beulah City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:30 pm (CT) Thursday, with a vigil service at 6:30 PM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Beulah.
Alice was born on May 3, 1937 near Turton, South Dakota to Olaf and Barbara (Schneider) Hagstrom. She grew up in the Turton area and attended school in Turton. She married her loving husband, Richard Battest, on December 21, 1954 at Turton, South Dakota. They lived and raised their family in Doland, South Dakota until August of 1978 when they moved to Beulah. While living in Doland and raising her own children she nurtured and loved many children entrusted into her care. She devoted her life to her family. She was a great cook and baker and was known for her potato salad and popcorn balls. She loved spending time with family and playing games. She loved her children and grandchildren giving all of them her special attention and hugs. The love she had for her family was embodied in some of her last words - “I love my family, every one of you, every ounce of you.” She was eagerly awaiting the birth of 3 more great-grandchildren and her first great-great-grandchild.
Alice will be dearly missed by her loving husband of almost 67 years, Richard; her children, Sally Battest, Steven Battest, Susan (Doug) Neuberger, Sherry (Jamie) Zacher, Scott (Paula) Battest and Stuart Battest; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mavis Irwin (fiancé, Virgil Melchior); her brother-in-law, Norman Battest; her sister-in-law Delores Battest; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Richard Frederick; her parents; her brothers, Clarence, Lawrence and Edward; her sisters, Donna, Grace, Donna and Dianna; her father and mother -in-law, William and Louise Battest; her brothers and sisters-in-law; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
