Born on January 11, 1932, to Oscar and Elizabeth (Wehri) Hauser, Alma grew up in the Haymarsh community northeast of Hebron, ND. From an early age, she displayed a deep love of learning that remained with her throughout her life. She attended high school in Hebron and continued her education in Bismarck, ND.
On February 12, 1958, Alma married Harold Conlon. They ranched near Golden Valley, ND, before settling on their ranch south of Richardton, ND. Alma was deeply proud of the family they raised and the life they created together during their 47 years of marriage. After Harold passed away, Alma made her home in Beulah, ND.
Alma was known for her sharp mind, warm heart, and joyful spirit. She embraced life with curiosity and courage, inspiring those around her through her creativity and openness to new experiences. A lifelong learner and avid reader, she delighted in exploring new ideas and mastering modern technology—often outpacing her grandchildren when it came to computers and communication devices. Alma especially enjoyed square dancing with Harold, lively games of cards and mahjong with friends, and the quiet artistry of sewing, quilting, and needlework.
Her talents were many, and her generosity knew no bounds. Alma’s flower gardens were a thing of beauty, and her handmade cards, quilts, and needlework were gifts of love. She stitched her care into every Christmas stocking and quilt she gave, wrapping family and friends in warmth that will be felt for generations to come.
Service to others was a natural part of Alma’s life. She volunteered for many years in the activities department at the Knife River Care Center, where she was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award. She also gave her time and compassion to the Sakakawea Hospice Program. Alma’s bright smile, encouraging words, and unwavering positivity lifted everyone around her.
Alma leaves behind a family who will continue to celebrate her remarkable life: her daughters and sons-in-law Beth and Tim McMahon of Ogema, MN; Deb and Ken East of Rapid City, SD; Kathy Kelsch and Bryan Tomchuk of Beulah, ND; and her son and daughter-in-law Bill and Terri Conlon of Chippewa Falls, WI; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her endless pride and joy—grandchildren, Ross, Lauren, Ryley, Eric, Shannon, LeAnn, Michelle, Misty, Alyssa, and Morgan; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Thomas, Madelyn, Hannah, Grace, Elon, Caspeia, Trenton, Oscar, Griffin, and Owen; her sister Betty Diede; sisters-in-law Gerry Hauser and Therisa Hauser; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; her infant sister, Lois; and her brothers Armin, Jack, and Don.
Memorials may be made to the ND Veterans Cemetery or the Sakakawea Hospice Program.
Alma’s legacy of unconditional love, resilience, and kindness lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
“The disappearance of loved ones from the landscape of our lives is the saddest adjustment required of us in the passage of time.”
