Alvin was born on August 14, 1924 to Jacob and Pauline (Breitling) Knell on the farm north of Krem. He was the youngest of eight children. Alvin was baptized into Christ on August 24, 1924 and confirmed on April 2, 1939. He attended country school and graduated from the 8th grade. Alvin married Marcella Adolf on Feb. 18, 1954 at St. Peters Church, rural Hazen. After they were married, they moved to the farm north of Hazen where they farmed their whole lives raising grain crops, along with some pigs, chickens and cattle. Together they raised three children and operated to farm until February of 1998. They retired from farming and moved to Hazen. They lived at a house in Hazen until July 25, 2017 when they moved to the Senior Suites until his passing.
Alvin was an active member and very involved in the church. He was part of the German Club and enjoyed singing the German songs. Alvin loved to go fishing when he could. He enjoyed tinkering in the garage making or fixing something. Among some of the tinkering was making wooden flowers as lawn ornaments. Alvin also enjoyed playing table and card games with family and friends. Alvin had a small collection of harmonicas which he enjoyed playing on occasion. One of Alvin’s favorite things to do was kicking his heals up dancing to polka’s and waltz’s and would never pass up an old time wedding dance.
