Benjamin Guenthner Obituary

Benjamin Leonard Guenthner, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday November 28, 2023. A graveside service was held on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Hazen with Pastor Kirk Peters officiating.

Bennie was the eighth of ten children, born October 10, 1929 to Tobias and Lydia (Kilber) Guenthner on the family farm, just west of what is now Pick City. Bennie was baptized December 1, 1929 and confirmed July 22, 1945.

In 1946 he moved into Hazen with his parents and he started working for Hanewald & Weigum. He worked various construction jobs including driving a Euclid truck for Peter Kiewit, hauling the huge boulders that line the face of the Garrison Dam.

He married Henrietta Loning March 16, 1956 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hazen. They were the first couple married in the new church. The family moved to  Wyoming for a short time when Bennie worked on the Glendo Dam. They returned to Hazen and Bennie worked at Arrow Creamery many years.

In the early 1970’s Bennie started working on construction sites at area power plants as a security guard and heater watch. During Antelope Valley construction, Bennie worked swing shift seven days a week for two and one-half years as a security guard. His last working years were spent as a laborer/coalman at the Leland Olds power plant. After retirement, he worked several stints as a security guard during shut-downs at Leland Olds.

Bennie enjoyed throwing horse shoes, pheasant hunting, fishing, going for drives in the country with his pickup, and was an avid Hazen Bison fan.  His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great-grandson. He was so proud of them and attended every event they participated in.  Bennie was a kind and gentle soul who will be dearly missed by his family.

He is survived by two daughters, Sherrie Guenthner; and Renae (Murray) Snyder; two grandsons, Kristopher (Sarah) Anderson; and Dustin (Chloe) Snyder; one grand-daughter, Kelsey (Jeremy) Garrett and their son, Hunter. Also many nephews and nieces and one sister in law, Janice Guenthner, Bismarck.

He was preceded by his parents; his wife, Henrietta; brothers: Ervin, Elthor, Otto, Reuben and Baby Johnny; his sisters: Lorraine Kruckenberg, Valanda Reich  Droste, Anna Oster Fetzer and Ruth Oster.
