Carey Fischer Obituary

Carey D. Fischer, 69, of Zap, ND passed away Friday, April 5, 2024. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah, ND with Pastor Toby Heller officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Wittenburg Cemetery, rural Zap.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 10 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Carey Darve Fischer was born on October 14th, 1954 in Hazen, ND to Ardella Amy (Walz) and Reuben Fischer. Carey was the firstborn of their four fourchildren. Due to his father's construction job, Carey attended various schools throughout his childhood. Despite this, he developed a love for reading and had a talent for inventing things, which he inherited from his Grandpa Fischer. Carey's love for dogs began with his dog, Happy, who rescued him from neighborhood bullies while living in Pick City, ND. He had many fond memories with his uncles who also moved around with their family. On one occasion, his uncles found him and his little brother, Merle, wandering far from home. When asked, the boys responded simply, they were "goin' fishin". The family eventually settled in Zap, ND, where Carey finished his education and actively participated in 4-H.

After graduating high school, Carey worked at the Hebron Brick Factory before joining the Minnesota Laborers Union. He also spent several years working on the family farm. Among his many hobbies, Carey was best known for his love of guns. He was very knowledgeable about history and weaponry. He enjoyed collecting guns, knives, survival gear, and historical replicas. He was an avid sportsman; a highlight of his life was joining a bear and buffalo hunt. Another of his favorite pastimes, Carey developed a love for riding motorcycles and later, driving to the lake in his pickup or 4-wheeler with his dogs.

Despite his towering presence, Carey had a heart of gold. He cared for his widowed mother and was always generous with his belongings, sharing them with friends and family. He remained a bachelor but built many meaningful connections with those around him. His nieces and nephews affectionately referred to him as "Uncle", and he always showed up to family parties with funny stories, jokes, and lots of laughter. Everyone knew they could count on him as a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Carey had many loyal friends, whom he considered family. They all lovingly nicknamed him "Meat".  He was a great conversationalist and many will miss his spontaneous visits. He lived for many years North of Zap and, in 2020, he moved into town where he continued to build relationships with new neighbors and friends. He passed away at his home on April 5th, 2024.

He is survived by his little sister Nola (Dale) Morgenstern; his sister-in-law Wendy Fischer; His nieces and nephews Shawn Fischer, Nicole Sullivan, Amie (Ben) Winters, Randi (Jared Moore) Bowes, Lindsey (JT Maynes) Fischer, Amanda (John) Titus, Alora Morgenstern, Anita (Layne) McCarthy; and several great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Reuben and Ardella Fischer; an infant sister; his brother and friend Merle Fischer; and his beloved dogs.

Carey was loved dearly by many, and his memory will live on as a testament to the kind, generous, and brilliant person he was.
