On Friday, May 8, 2026, Carl Lee Burchill - loving husband, father, Papa, brother, and friend - passed away peacefully at the age of 79, surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah, North Dakota.
Burial will be held privately the following day in Williston, North Dakota.
Carl was born on December 17, 1946, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to Victor and Agnes (Johnson) Burchill. He graduated from Beulah High School in 1964. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith which remained a steady foundation throughout his life. Carl was a proud member of Boy Scouts of America, earning both the rank of Eagle Scout and the Pro Deo Award.
On August 6, 1967, Carl married Brenda Joyce Wallender and together they raised four children: Chad, Corey, Casey, and Amanda.
Carl had a remarkable gift for friendship, and many people considered him their "best" friend. He was also a gifted storyteller who never minded retelling a favorite story - and somehow, those around him never minded hearing it again.
He had a lifelong love of golf - and on February 23, 2025, he proudly achieved his one and only hole-in-one. Summers at the lake were among Carl's favorite times. Whether he was fishing, mowing the lawn, taking the pontoon out for a ride, or simply enjoying the company of family and friends, the lake was one of his happiest places.
Carl rarely missed one of his children's sporting events and was a familiar sight on the sidelines with a stopwatch hanging around his neck, beeping endlessly because he never quite figured out how to turn it off. He showed up consistently, enthusiastically, and with unwavering support.
His love for his grandchildren was profound. It was never too early for Papa to make pancakes, and after school, a Coca-Cola and Snickers bar were often waiting.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Agnes; his son, Chad; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Esther and Albert Wallender; and his brother-in-law, Brian Wallender.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Brenda; his children, Corey (Paula Lund), Casey (Maggie Olson-Key), and Amanda (Marc Zale); his grandchildren, Erik, Carl, Ingrid, Reese, Silas, Quinn, Tommy, Dylan, and Cooper; his brother, Alan (Jill); and several extended family members, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Carl fought cancer with remarkable strength, determination, and grace. Now, he is at peace - and for that, we are grateful.
"Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning!" - Psalm 30:5b
