Carlyle "Kraut" Sailer Obituary

Carlyle Willis “Kraut” Sailer, 74 of Hazen, ND passed away peacefully at his home on January 18, 2026. Services will be held at 1:00 PM CT on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at a later date.

Carlyle was born on March 7, 1951 in Mandan, ND to Wilmar and Frieda C. (Wiedrich) Sailer. He was the first born of five children. Carlyle enjoyed helping take care of his siblings along with excelling in school and his talent with music as he was growing up. In high school, he earned numerous awards for his talent of playing the accordion and tuba. After high school, Carlyle decided to attend Valley City College and major in music. That was short lived when he found out he was one number away from being drafted to the Vietnam War. Carlyle decided to volunteer for the United States Army in 1971. He was drafted for 18 months and in that duration he earned two awards with one being the Combat Infantryman badge and the other, a Bronze Star medal award for heroic achievement. He also earned a National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal and a Vietnam Campaign medal. He was always very humble about his service to the United States.

After the Vietnam War, Carlyle decided to enter into the Boilermakers Local 647 and ended up making a 40 year career out of it. Carlyle was well-known for helping people on the job and made many friends along the way in all areas of life.

In 1978, Carlyle met Jane Christman and they married in Stanton, ND on May 14, 1982. Carlyle adopted Jenny and took her in as his own. In 1984, the couple had a son, Adam. Carlyle and his family resided in Hazen and made it their home. As a family they enjoyed some traveling, ice fishing and camping.

In 1996 and 2001, Carlyle became grandpa to his two grandsons, Bransen and Jaxen. His grandsons enjoyed their Grandpa Sailer more than he may have known. Grandpa Sailer taught them a lot about life.

When time allowed, Carlyle enjoyed playing in his bands back in the 70s and 80s. He played the bass guitar and loved to sing, especially alongside his musically talented brothers. His sister enjoyed listening to them play together. One of the more famous bands that Carlyle and his brothers put together was named E-Z Riders. They traveled to local and surrounding pubs and had fun playing for the communities. They played the golden oldies of rock and roll.

Carlyle also enjoyed his classic vehicles and Harleys. He drove them as much as he could, especially during his retirement. Carlyle was always out and about visiting during the day with the other guys. When Jane retired, she joined Carlyle with his drive and socializing. He was also a member of the Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club Station 162.

Carlyle was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was definitely a man of his word, and had integrity, honesty, respect, compassion, loyalty and perseverance. Carlyle will be greatly missed by everyone.

He is survived by his wife, Jane of Hazen; his daughter, Jenny (Terry) of Carson, ND; son, Adam of Hazen; two grandsons, Bransen of Stanton and Jaxen (Aria) of Hazen; three brothers, Keith Sailer of Reno, NV, Verdean Sailer and Darcy (Shelly) Sailer, all of Stanton; one sister, Alana of Stanton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carlyle was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law; grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.
