Charles "Chuck" Dahl Obituary

It is hard to process that one of the Good Guys, Chuck, left this earth and the Hazen Community on a very hot, May evening, holding his better half, Shelly’s, hand. Charles Dahl, 69, of Hazen, ND passed away peacefully at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen, under the care of hospice, on May 12, 2025.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM CT on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at Hazen Methodist Church, Hazen with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating. Burial will follow at Hazen City Cemetery, Hazen.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Charles “Chuck” Edward Dahl was born on July 19, 1955 in Poplar, MT to Frances and Otis Dahl, the youngest of five children. His family moved to Carrington, ND, where Chuck grew up and attended school. He was active in wrestling and football. Chuck always greeted everyone with a warm smile, was a very humble man and had a dry sense of humor.

Chuck met Shelly Hartman on a blind date. At the end of the date, he shook her hand and said, “Nice to meet you.” Shelly went on to become the love of his life and they were married in June 1978. The couple had one daughter, Sarah. They moved to Hazen from Minot, ND in 1983 where he began his career as a police officer. Chuck later went on to become the chief of police and was very dedicated to the Hazen community. He was so dedicated he would often miss out on family gatherings. Chuck retired after 30 plus years in law enforcement. Throughout the years, he also did beautiful carpentry work. Chuck was often found in his shop, covered in saw dust and building pieces of furniture for family and friends.

He also loved to ride motorcycle and made special trips with his friends and especially his daughter, Sarah. Those trips included Yellowstone, Glacier, Las Vegas and Sedona, just to name a few. Traveling was great highlight, whether by auto, boat or motorcycle. He also enjoyed a little hunting and fishing, and a good card game at family gatherings.

Chuck leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Shelly of Hazen; his daughter, Sarah (Glenn) Crowe of Devils Lake, ND; two brothers, Richard (Sherry) Dahl and William (Susan) Dahl; two sisters, Rosemary Houk and Barb Dahl; two sisters-in-law, Trish (Dave) Greenwood and Connie Hartman; one brother-in-law, Russ Hartman; and many nieces and nephews dear to his heart.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Otis; his father-in-law, Ray Hartman and his mother-in-law, Pat Hartman; two brothers-in-law, Steve Hartman and Carl Houk.

In lieu of flowers, Shelly, Sarah and Glenn ask that any memorials be made to SMC Hospice, 510 8th Ave NE, Hazen, ND 58545.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
