Charles "Chuck" Stroup Obituary

Charles Wayne Stroup, 77, Hazen, ND passed away on May 18, 2024 at Sakakawea Medical Center.  Memorial services are pending.

Charles was born in Beulah, ND on April 17, 1947 to George M. Stroup and Enid E. Stroup (Haas).  He was raised and educated in Hazen.  In 1969 he graduated from North Dakota State University, Fargo.  In 1969 he joined the ROTC program at NDSU.  He  entered active duty in 1971 as a commissioned officer in the Adjutant General Corp at Fort Richardson, AK.  In 1971 he also met his wife Shari (Butler) on the ferry to Alaska and they were married in 1972.

Their first son, Seth Adam was born in Anchorage, AK in 1973.  Upon discharge from the Army, the family moved back to Hazen where Charles worked at the Union State Bank.  In 1982, they welcomed their second son, Noah Charles.

Charles often volunteered his services to local and statewide organizations, frequently in a leadership role.  He may be best known for what might have been an original thought, the Zip to Zap in 1969.  This event to this day is recorded in North Dakota history books.

Mr. Stroup enjoyed asking kids about their passions, believing that it is in their passions they would find a source of joy and satisfaction.  For him, sailing, woodworking, reading, music and being with family and friends topped his list of passions.  He also found great comfort as a student of spirituality in his later years.

Charles is survived by his wife, Shari, West Linn, OR; his son, Seth Stroup, Lincoln, NE; his son, Noah Stroup and  wife Nicole , West Linn, OR; his sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Harvey Huber, Jamestown, ND and six grandchildren: Kale Stroup and Jonah Stroup, Grand Forks, Reiah Stroup, Lincoln, NE, Sarah Stroup, Lawrence, KS, Avery and Stella Stroup, West Linn, OR.

He is preceded in death by his father George and his mother Enid.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to SMC Hospice Foundation; 510 8th Ave. NE, Hazen, ND  58545 or Dollars for Scholars; Attn:  Diane Jacobson, P.O. Box 468, Hazen, ND 58545-0468.  Arrangements are being conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen—barbotfuneralhome.com.
