DeLane was born September 19, 1960 in Jamestown, North Dakota. He was the son of Lawrence and Darlene (Finck) Bauer.  DeLane grew up in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High in 1978. He continued his education at Dickinson State College with a cross country and track scholarship.  DeLane attained a B. S. Degree in Biology. In 2009 DeLane was inducted into the Dickinson State University Athletic Hall of Fame as one of the school’s best long distance runners.  DeLane was on the NDCAC all-conference first team and the team’s Most Valuable Runner all four seasons he competed.  After college, DeLane worked as summer help at Knife River Coal, which later became Dakota Westmoreland, in Beulah. Throughout his 36 year career DeLane was an Environmental Technician, Reclamation Foreman, and then a Production Supervisor and Wildlife Technician. For the past few years, DeLane has been the groundskeeper at the Black Sands Golf Course in Beulah.

On June 9, 1990, DeLane married Sandra Cline at Beulah Congregational Church, where he was a member and a current deacon. He enjoyed gardening/canning, golfing, softball, bowling, and hunting but his passion was fishing.
