Dennis F Barnhardt

Dennis Frank Barnhardt, 78, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, surrounded by the love of his family.

Dennis was born on October 13, 1947, at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, to John Barnhardt Jr. and Flora (Lipp) Barnhardt.

Dennis married the love of his life, Vicky Ann Berg, on February 24, 1968. Together they built a life centered on faith, hard work, family, and love, sharing more than 58 years of marriage.

Dennis left high school to answer the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. His love for America remained a defining part of who he was throughout his life. He proudly displayed his patriotism every chance he had, and no holiday brought him more joy than the Fourth of July.

Throughout his life, Dennis embraced every opportunity to provide for his family.  He tended to the family farm in Center, worked in the concrete industry, started a tool business during the oil boom called Big Red Hot Shot, and later returned to school to complete his GED and associate’s degree in Refrigeration Technology and started his career in Iowa.  Dennis and Vicky later returned to North Dakota to be closer to family and eventually made their home in Lincoln, ND where he lived until his passing.

At the age of 55, Dennis received the gift of a heart transplant. He cared for that second heart with unwavering dedication and gratitude. At the time of his passing, he was the longest-living heart transplant recipient in the state of North Dakota, a remarkable testament to both modern medicine and his determination to live life to its fullest.

Above all else, Dennis treasured his family. Nothing brought him greater happiness than having his children and grandchildren together. Whether helping with a home repair, offering lawn care tips, or sharing his famous “Dad Advice,” he was always ready to lend a hand. He loved hunting, fishing, visiting with family and friends, and was happiest when someone stopped by to catch up over a cocktail. His generosity, sense of humor, steady presence, and willingness to help anyone in need will be deeply missed.

Dennis is survived by his devoted wife, Vicky Barnhardt; his children, Tamara (Darin) Leetun, Michelle (Mark) Edwards and Bryanne, Brad (Jennifer) Barnhardt, Brayson, and Addyson, and Caleb, Justin (Channing) Barnhardt, and Scott (Kathryn) Barnhardt and Owen and Emma; his sister, Helen Pfleger; several sisters and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews; extended family member; and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law; his brothers, Kenneth, William, and Robert (Paulette); his sister, Annette Voth; an infant sister, Alice; his brothers-in-law, Tony Pfleger and Jim Berg; and his sister-in-law, Beverly (Ray) Kessler.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026 at Ascension Catholic Church, 1825 S. 3rd Street, Bismarck, North Dakota, with Fr. Russ Kovash officiating.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. at Barbot Funeral Home, 1301 ND-49, Beulah, North Dakota, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Dennis’s lifelong dedication to his country and his fellow veterans.

Dennis’s legacy is one of service, resilience, hard work, and unconditional love. He proudly served his country, cherished his family, and lived a life defined by generosity, perseverance, and quiet strength. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love him.
