Donna (Kessler) Hartwig

Donna Hartwig, 80, of Beulah, ND died peacefully on Tuesday July 19, 2022 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen, ND. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT, Saturday, July 23, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah with Fr. Tom Grafsgaard officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, at the church with a rosary to begin at 7:00 PM.

Donna was born on May 2, 1942 in Beulah to Fred and Frances (Hoepfner) Kessler.  She grew up in Beulah and attended country school and graduated from Beulah High School in 1960. 

On September 3, 1960 Donna married Duane Hartwig at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beulah.  They lived most of their married life in Beulah where they raised their children.  She worked as a Program Technician for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office in Beulah for 18 years, retiring in 2004.

She enjoyed spending time outside in her vegetable and flower gardens, it was her relaxing time after work. She also enjoyed volunteering her time.  She made thousands of mission rosaries in her lifetime, and both Donna and Duane volunteered for hospice for many years, curling ribbons for the Sakakawea Hospice Valentine’s Day cookie fundraiser.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.  Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. 

She is survived by her children, Stacey (Mark) Grunhovd of Beulah, Mark Hartwig of Beulah, Shawn (Sarah) Hartwig of Kearney, MO, Perry (Sara) Hartwig of Fargo, ND, and Shannon (Brian) Jongeward of Grand Forks, ND; eight grandchildren, Cory (Audra) Grunhovd, Ashley (Dusty) Njaa, Kasey Hartwig, Emily Hartwig, Austin Lamb, Lanna Hartwig, Brady Jongeward and Bailey Jongeward; seven great-grandchildren, Rayelle, Ronan, and Raidyn Hartwig, Astrid, Elin, and Hendrik Grunhovd, and Ezra Njaa; sister and brother-in-law Eileen and Kelly Heihn of Mandan, ND, sister-in-law Betty Hartwig of West Fargo, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane; her infant son, James; and one sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and Gene Brilz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Knife River Care Center Foundation.
