Duane “Jim” Retterath, 82, of Bismarck, ND passed away Friday, January 17, 2020 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at St. Martin Catholic Church, Center, ND with Fr. John Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM CST at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Jim was born on November 12, 1937 in Hazen, ND to Leonard and Dorothy (Lange) Retterath. He grew up and attended rural school in the Pleasant Valley, ND area. Jim joined the US Army in 1957 and was stationed in Germany until 1959. When he returned from the service, he began working construction, eventually becoming a pipefitter and welder. Jim also farmed and ranched for many years, raising registered Black Angus cattle. He married Gloria Rudolph on September 17, 2005 at his farm. The couple made their home on the farm until they moved to Bismarck in 2013. Jim moved to Missouri Slope in 2017, due to his battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Cattle and ranching were Jim’s passions in life. He greatly enjoyed driving his mule team in parades and for weddings in the area. Jim was content to be at home on his farm, fixing machinery and taking care of his cattle. He also enjoyed going to the ND State Fair with Gloria and watching the draft horse pulls. Jim was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church and was a mass reader for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria of Bismarck; his brother, Bill (Carol) Retterath of Center; three sisters, Rita Kent and Kathy (Curtis) Birst, both of Bimarck and Jane Pearson of Hazen; Gloria’s children, David (Kari) Rudolph of Bismarck and Scott (Jackie) Rudolph of Stanley, ND and grandchildren Tyler Rudolph, Matt Rudolph, Sara Rudolph, Colton Rudolph, Cody Rudolph, Cayne Rudolph; long-time friends Rod (Deb) Koenig of Hazen, ND and Melody (Scott) Bielen of Great Falls, MT , and their children Derek Koenig, Cody Koenig, and Sara Bielen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Dorothy; his sister, Donna Eisenmann and three brothers-in-law, Layton Eisenmann, William Kent and Neal Pearson.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
