DyAnn Ellwein Obituary

Devoted Wife, Loving Mother, Faithful Servant, Joyful Spirit

DyAnn Ellwein, a woman of unwavering faith, boundless energy, and a joyful heart, passed away on September 26, 2025, at the age of 83. A lifelong Lutheran and servant of her community, DyAnn’s legacy is one of faith, family, friendship, humor, and fierce compassion.

Born in Hazen, North Dakota, DyAnn grew up with deep rural roots that shaped her strong work ethic and love of the land. She was a full-time partner alongside her beloved husband, Ivan Ellwein, on their dairy farm. Married for 65 years, they built a life grounded in hard work, deep faith, and a shared sense of humor. Some of their most cherished memories were made snowmobiling through the breathtaking trails of Yellowstone National Park – a place they returned to often, drawn by the beauty of nature, the thrill of the ride, and the joy of exploring it side by side.

Despite living for many years with multiple sclerosis, DyAnn never let it define or limit her. She faced each day with resilience, refusing to let her condition dim her spirit. She was a tireless advocate for those who couldn’t speak for themselves, especially in the nursing home where she resided. As president of the resident council at Knife River Care Center, she made sure every voice was heard—especially those most often overlooked.

DyAnn wore many hats throughout her life—and wore each with purpose and pride. She served as president of the North Dakota Soil Conservation Ladies Auxiliary, was an active Jaycee, a devoted member of the LWML Ladies Aid (helping create items to support mission work across the world), and a 4-H leader. Her leadership extended into social life as well, as a cherished member of the Ladies Birthday Club—a monthly gathering of close-knit friends who celebrated life’s milestones together. She also worked as a CNA at Prairie View Nursing Home, where she cared for others—including her own mother—with tenderness and dedication. DyAnn also served on the state team for bowling.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devout member of Trinity Lutheran Church, DyAnn taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, played the church organ for over 20 years, and was active in many church mission projects. She lived her faith daily—not only in words but in action.

Known for her sense of humor and mischievous spirit, DyAnn never missed a chance to pull a good prank or share a laugh. Her quick wit and infectious positivity lifted the spirits of everyone around her. She was always looking for the light—and more often than not, she was the one shining it.

She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Emma Isaak,Margie (sister) and Donny Miller, Marvin and Wilma (sister) Lang, Gordon (brother) and Marion Isaak, Kenneth Stelzmiller,  Clara  Isaak (sister-in-law), Orville and Inez Renner (sister-in-law).

She is survived by her devoted husband, Ivan Ellwein; her four loving children, Jeff (Connie) Ellwein, Marie (Richard) Sarratt, Barb (Phil) MacGregor, and Rebecca (Matheaw) Parisien; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

DyAnn’s life was a beautiful testament to faith, love, resilience, and joy. She gave freely of herself—serving others, fighting for those without a voice, and always keeping her sense of humor. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her light and laughter will live on in the many lives she touched.

A funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran on October 4, 2025, at 10:00 AM with Pastor Jeremiah Olson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran, in honor of DyAnn’s lifelong commitment to faith and service.
