Following is the story of Edwin’s life as he wrote:

I was born May 5, 1926 northeast of Halliday, ND, the son of Albert and Louise Faser Miller. At age 4 we moved 3 miles north to the reservation. At age 12 we moved to the farm 10 miles north of Golden Valley. On November 3, 1946 I got married to my love, Esther Miller, (no relation). We stayed on the home place until 1952 when we moved to a farm 5 miles northwest of Golden Valley. In 1960 we moved to a farm 5 miles north of Dodge where we spent the rest of our farm life. In 1988 we moved into Dodge. While on the farm I served 3 years on the Goldman District School Board and 9 years on the Dodge Elevator Board. When living in town I served 3 years on the town board. I helped with various jobs around town. I also served 3 years as the chair of the Dodge Commercial Club. I served 60 years on the Church Council at St. James Lutheran Church in Golden Valley. From here you know the rest.  (Edwin’s words)

During his younger years Edwin played baseball for several local teams, namely Golden Valley and Halliday. This is a passion he inherited from his dad, Albert, and Uncle Gothart Miller who had both played. He could tell many baseball stories of the friends he played with. He was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs whom he got to see play at Wrigley Field and finally got to witness win a World Series.

He and Esther raised 3 children: Marvin (Wendy) of Mandan, Barbara Kusmenko (Calvin) of Zap and Connie Monson (Kevin Ridl) of Dickinson. He followed their school activities closely. They both loved playing cards and were members of several card clubs. Edwin loved his pinochle and spent many hours at the Dodge Country Store playing with his friends. He was also quite the fisherman. He made many trips to Lake Sakakawea by himself but really enjoyed going to Connie’s or Marvin’s cabins to fish.  It was always a great time.

Following Esther’s death Edwin moved to the Senior Suites in Hazen for nearly 6 years. Probably his favorite times there were playing Bingo or Rummicub. He was always competitive in whatever games he was playing and usually was quite successful.

Edwin is survived by Marvin and Connie, son-in-law Calvin, 8 grandchildren: Todd Miller, Tori (Ryan) Renner, Tami (Tom) Knorr, Toby Miller, Jason (Liza) Kusmenko, Jody (Chris) Bauer, Kari Monson and Shayna Monson, and 9 great grandchildren: Keaton, Eli and Samuel Goldade, Josiah Renner, Lucas, Claire and Charlie Bauer, Hazel Knorr and Nicholai Kusmenko, sister Loraine Raszler of Dickinson, brother Gary (Susan) of Beulah and sister-in-law Diane Miller of Minnesota.

Preceding Edwin in death were his parents, wife of 69 years, Esther, daughter Barbara, brothers Norman (Laverne), Dale, sisters Vera (Oscar) Ziegler, Mardella (Ted) Schultz, Gladys (Leo) Link and grandson, Chad Goldade. Also going on before were in-laws Ernestine (Bill) Raab, Ida (Robert) Eman, Henry (Ida) Miller and Richard Miller.

The family wishes to extend their thanks for the wonderful care Dad received at the Senior Suites.  Many special bonds were developed with the staff there.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to either the Senior Suites at Sakakawea, 813 7th St NE, Hazen, ND 58545 or Sakakawea Medical Center Hospice, 903 Sunrise Drive, Hazen, ND  58545.
