Elmer was born on November 19, 1930, in Zap, ND, to Rudolf and Rebecca (Knecht) Sailer, immigrants from Russia. He grew up and attended Zap Country School until ninth grade. On December 5, 1965, he married Linda Sailer at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Halliday, ND. The couple resided north of Zap, ND, where they raised their three children, Kevin, Kenny, and Kathleen. Elmer and Linda moved to Beulah in 1994.
Elmer farmed with his dad and then with his brother, Eugene, and their wives until he injured his shoulder from calving. Farming was his favorite, but he also enjoyed playing pinochle and 3:13 with friends and family. Elmer loved playing the piano, harmonica, and accordion, and most impressively, learned by ear. He served as a church council member, deacon, treasurer, financial secretary, Sunday school teacher, and choir member for many years. Elmer was a faithful servant of the Soil Conservation Service board for 25 years as well as a member of the Zap School Board, Zap Elevator Board, and Farm Bureau Board.
Elmer is survived by his children, Kevin Sailer of Zap, Kenny (Julie) Sailer of Lincoln, NE, and Kathleen Sailer of Wiggins, CO; four grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Miller, Chase Sailer, Chandler (Dawn) Sailer, and Chelsea (Jeff) Walls; five great-grandchildren, Leif Miller, Natalea Walls, Kaulder Miller, Luna Mae Walls, Louella Walls; brother, Eugene (Eldora) Sailer of Zap; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda of Beulah; his parents and nine siblings: Erwin, Hertha Burow, Alfred, Reynold, Richard, Ruby Tesky, Irene Sailer, Ardella Herrmann, and Helen Sailer.
