Elmer Schiermeister, 89, of Hazen, ND passed away Sunday, November 2, 2025 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen. Services will be held at 9:00 AM CT on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, ND with Pastor Zelwyn Heide officiating. Burial will be held at 1:00 PM CT on Thursday at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Elmer was born at his grandma’s house in Hazen on January 16, 1936 to Fred and Mary (Wagner) Schiermeister. Elmer was baptized on May 17, 1936 and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah. Elmer’s family lived north of Hazen and also southwest of Hazen before moving to a farm west of Stanton. He graduated from Stanton High School in 1954. Elmer was active in 4-H earning the 4-H Key Club Award.
Elmer enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and served from 1958 to 1962. In service he was a radio code operator, stationed in Japan. After he was honorably discharged, Elmer joined the National Guard for a few years.
Elmer married Carol Neuberger on April 23, 1966 at Concordia Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Hazen where they added two daughters to their family, Paula and Carrie.
Elmer served as elder, church president and funeral usher as a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen.
Elmer worked for Liebelt Chevrolet for a couple years before being hired at Leland Olds Station in Stanton. He started as a boiler attendant and worked his way up the ranks to shift supervisor. He was employed at Leland Olds for 29 and a half years before retiring. In retirement he spent time working at Lake Potato and helping at Bridgeman Dairy.
Elmer and Carol enjoyed traveling to polka fests in Canada, Arizona, Oregon, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska. The couple enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ for the last eight years. Elmer also enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing and doing volunteer work at Medora and the Norsk Hostfest in Minot, ND.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol of Hazen; two daughters, Paula Mantz of Hazen and Carrie (Andrew Hill) Nelson of Scottsdale, AZ; three granddaughters, Ashlee (Kyle Kelly) Mantz of Denver, CO, Dr. Brandi (Josh) Steffan of Bismarck, ND and Shania (Wyatt) Haiby of Little Elm, TX; one great-granddaughter, Cora Steffan; two sisters, Fern Werner of Mandan, ND and Elizabeth (Roland) Crawford of Ohio ; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Lord and Savior; his parents; his siblings, Ralph Schiermeister, Lenora (Lloyd) Alderin, Jeanette (Leonard) Perelberg; brother-in-law, Melvin Werner; all of his uncles and aunts; and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the charity of the givers choice.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
