He attended grade school at the country school west of Hazen and later Hazen High School, graduating in 1948. Ernest continued his education at North Dakota State University before returning home to take over the family farming operations after his father’s death.

A man of deep faith, he was a dedicated member of Peace Lutheran Church in Hazen. His commitment to community was evident in his service on the boards of Union State Bank, Hazen Hospital (SMC), and the Soil Conservation District. He was a member of the Lions Club and sang for many years with the Knife River Chorale, sharing his time and love of music.

Ernest enjoyed reading, visiting with family and friends, playing cards, dancing, and traveling. In retirement he also found fulfillment in wood turning, stained glass work, the continued enjoyment of music and playing bingo at Royal Oaks.
