Esther Mittlesteadt, 91, of Hazen, ND passed away Monday, September 18, 2023 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah with her son, David, by her side, under hospice care. Services will be held 10:00 AM CDT on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Mark Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Esther was born on February 6, 1932 to Albert and Othelia (Machau) Fandrich, north of Hazen. She attended country school. In the winter, her dad would hitch the team to the sled and send it with the kids to school. The kids would get out and send the team back home. In the afternoon, he would send the team to go and pick them up again.
Esther worked at the Arrow Creamery Café in Hazen. She married Walter Mittelsteadt on January 29, 1954. Their son, David was born in November 1954. Walter and Esther enjoyed dancing at barn dances and also participated in square dancing. Together they farmed and ranched until moving to town.
Esther loved quilting with her sisters, Ruth and Luella and the Ladies Quilt Guild in Hazen. Her family has many beautiful quilts and table runners that she made!
Walter passed away on March 2, 2015. Esther was a resident at Senior Suites in Hazen until moving to Knife River Care Center.
Esther is survived by her son, David (Sara) of Hazen; her grandchildren, Adrian (Shawna) of Hazen, Matthew of Bismarck and Vanessa (Rex) Batie of Sisseton, SD; her great-grandchildren, Ehren and Skyler Mittelsteadt of Canada, Ashlyn and Taylor Batie of Sisseton, Romany, Ottilia and Gertrude Mittelsteadt of Hazen; her brothers, Douglas and Theodore Fandrich, both of Bismarck and James Fandrich of Beulah; her sister-in-law, Esther Kruckenberg of Mandan; her brothers-in-law, Gordon and Roy Mittlesteadt, both of California; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her parents; her sisters, Maxine Heier, June Sullivan, Luella Wolf and Ruth Mettler; and her brother, Roy Fandrich.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to SMC Hospice or to a charity of the giver’s choice.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
