Eugene Buchmann Obituary

Eugene F. Buchmann, 101, of Beulah, ND passed away surrounded by his daughters on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, ND. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Beulah Congregational Church, Beulah with Pastor Andy Early officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eugene was born on May 7, 1921 in Rhine, ND to John J. and Carolina (Scheidt) Buchmann. Eugene was raised in the Rhine area in Oliver County and attended school until the eighth grade. As a young boy, Eugene was interested in the mechanics of engines, which led him to starting his business, Hillside Garage.

Eugene was farmer and a mechanic for all the neighbors, plus friends and relatives near and far. Eugene also raised 2,000 to 5,000 turkeys for a few years. After Eugene moved to Bismarck he still worked on engines, just on a smaller scale. When Eugene was a young man, he joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) camp from 1935-1937. Eugene married Lorraine Vivian Moos on October 3, 1943 at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. The couple began building their farmstead where they raised their children, Dorothy, Loretta, LaVonne and Vernon on the family farm.

Eugene loved to camp and go fishing. Eugene and Lorraine went to Germany with Eugene’s sister, Ramona Kasanke and her husband Paul. They also went on a cruise to Alaska. Eugene enjoyed visiting with his great-great-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and grandchildren, as well as his many nieces and nephews. They loved to listen to stories of Eugene’s experiences, especially the mischievous times with his brothers-in-law, Elmer and Wilbert Moos.

Eugene had a passion for working on old tractors and stationary engines. He also enjoyed working with wood in his later years. Eugene liked making hope chests for his family members from the wood of the black walnut trees he grew from nuts off of the first tree he planted. Eugene won a forestry award from Oliver County and a soil conservation award for his black walnut trees. He now has a grove of black walnut trees at the farm and many of his family members have continued his legacy and have receive tree seedlings of their own.

Eugene is survived by his daughters, Dorothy Sanda, Loretta Anderson and LaVonne (Melvin) Neuberger; one son, Vernon (Ofelia) Buchmann; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Buchmann and Donald (Cheryl) Buchmann; one sister, Caroline Koehler; one sister-in-law, Hildegard Moos; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Lorraine; his parents; his in-laws, Rudolph and Martha (Kroh) Moos; one son-in-law, Larry Dean Anderson; one grandson-in-law, Kurt Flaagan; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Neuberger and Sophia Anderson; one brother, Otto (Lucille); five sisters, Wilma (Ben) Thomas, Gladys (Raymond) Moos, Ramona (Paul) Kasanke, RoseAnn (Ivan) Sasse and Pearl (Alvin) Weil; one brother-in-law, Mervin Koehler; and one sister-in-law, Linda Buchmann.
