Frances BlackTailDeer-Chase (“Woman Walks Sacred Path” Arii Xobaa mia niirish), 70, of New Town, ND passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025 at Trinity Health, Minot, ND. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CT on Monday, March 24, 2025 at Twin Buttes Wellness Center, Twin Buttes, ND with Pastor Kevin Finley officiating. Burial will follow at Chase Family Cemetery, Twin Buttes, ND.
A wake will begin at 5:00 PM CT on Sunday, March 23 at Twin Buttes Wellness Center. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM CT on Sunday at Barbot Funeral Home with a procession leaving at 4:00 PM.
Frances was born to Carolyn Crowe and Cloud Chase, Sr. in Hazen, ND on December 10, 1954. She was a Dripping Dirt Child of a Water Buster. Frances attended elementary school in Twin Buttes and later moved to South Dakota, graduating high school in 1973. She attended San Francisco State College after high school from 1973-74. She went on to enroll in the Indian Health Program, obtaining her CNA license. She also attended Lafayette Academy in Rhode Island for two years.
Frances worked in the health care field as a CNA in South Dakota and Minnesota for numerous years. She was a phlebotomist in Saudi Arabia and returned back to the United States and was relocated to San Francisco, before returning to Deadwood, SD.
Frances loved to travel. She called herself “The Pilgrim” because she had traveled all around the world. She met the love of her life, Veldon BlackTailDeer in 1986 in Rapid City, SD. They enjoyed 38 years together and traveled across the US, swam in all the oceans and enjoyed numerous locations. Frances and Veldon raised five children and enjoyed being a part of their 16 grandchildren’s and nine great-grandchildren’s lives.
Throughout their marriage, Frances and Veldon owned numerous businesses that ranged from construction, cooking and pottery. She also worked in several casinos in MN, SD, ND and WI. In 2010, Frances came home to be with her family and embraced her role as “Auntie Mom” and “Gummy Bear”.
Frances is survived by her husband, Veldon of New Town; her daughters, Natasha Bird Song of Memphis, TN, Jameelah Chase of Apple Valley, MN, and Dana (Darryle Grady) Chase of New Town; three nieces/daughters, Lois Chapin of Bismarck, ND, and Caroline Chase and Lisa Chase, both of New Town; four nephews/sons, Marlon Chase and Daniel (Kristin) Chase, all of New Town, and Jamie Killssmall and Jaron Killssmall, both of Rapid City; grandchildren, Cleveland Palmer V, Kira TaDeanna, Jade Birdsong, James Mitchell, Kalonji Wilkins Jr.,Olivia Wilkins-Miers, Jonathan Sharpe, Jr. Mya Sharpe, Justice Chase-Humbert and Taylor Chase; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; godparents, Evan and Gurtrude Burr; brothers, Marvin Chase, Richard “Jimmy” Chase, Cloud “Freddy” Chase, Jr, and Scott Chase and Charles Chase; sisters, Eleanore Umlauf and Annette Chase; her nieces and nephews, Carolynn, Claudette, James, and baby boy Chase; her grandchildren, Paige Cassidy Chase, Marlin “Sonny” Chase, Jr, and Ethan Chapin.
