Frieda Elizabeth Maas was born August 14, 1938, to Martin and Hilda (Ude) Schwarz. She was baptized on September 11, 1938. Frieda was raised on her family’s farm Southeast of Beulah and went to country school through eighth grade. Frieda attended and graduated from Beulah High School in 1957. Frieda met her husband Raymond Maas, and they were married on November 24, 1961. Frieda and Raymond went on to have five children.

From a young age, Frieda demonstrated an exceptional ability to make the most of what she had. As a devoted wife and mother, she sewed clothing for her children, baked homemade bread and delicious German meals that became family favorites. She was especially known for her delicious fleischkuechle and kuchen recipes. Frieda fulfilled her lifelong aspiration of publishing a cookbook filled with cherished family recipes, ensuring their legacy would endure for generations.

After her children left home, Frieda expanded her contributions beyond the farm. She began her own residential cleaning services, worked as a cook at Hot Stuff pizza, and later as a cook at the Knife River Care Center.

Frieda had many hobbies and talents she continued in her later years, she spent countless hours on handmade creations such as beautiful quilts, embroidered dishtowels and pillowcases and crocheted hand towels, blankets, and potholders. She dedicated her time and skill to crafting hundreds of quilt blocks for donation to the local church. Her handmade creations were treasured by all who received them.

As Frieda’s health declined, she relocated to Sheyenne Crossings Assisted Living center in West Fargo to be nearer to her two daughters for increased support and assistance. Frieda took pleasure in socializing, engaging in music activities, and participating in bingo during her time at Sheyenne Crossings.
