He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, north of Hazen and was raised on a farm north of Hazen. The family moved south of Hazen and then north of Zap where he helped his parents on the farm until entering the US Army in February 1954 to February 1956, serving in Fort Riley, Kansas, Fort Bliss, Texas and Fort Benning, Georgia.

On April 15, 1955 he married Johanna Wiedrich at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zap. Following their marriage, they made their home in Bismarck, ND where he was employed by Sears. He went on to continue his education at Bismarck Junior College and enrolled in a welding course. He was employed with various construction companies as a millwright during the building of the power plants in Beulah, Stanton, Center and Underwood. From 1989 to 2006, Gerhard and Johanna lived in Las Vegas, NV where he was employed with Coker Equipment and Blaine Equipment (John Deere) until his retirement in 2005. They moved back to Hazen in 2006.

Gery taught Sunday school in Bismarck and Hazen, was an active member in the Men’s Chorus, church choir, gospel groups and Knife River Chorale in Hazen, Bismarck and Las Vegas.
