Harold Voigt Obituary

Harold Voigt, 87, Beulah, ND died Saturday, Apr. 18, 2026 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 11:00 AM CT on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Harold was born on September 23, 1938, on the family homestead south of Rhame, North Dakota, to Emanuel George Voigt and Pearl Constance (Oakland) Voigt. He was the youngest of four children. Growing up, he loved working alongside his dad, playing baseball, and singing in church. Harold graduated from Rhame High School.

On August 9, 1958, he married Sharon Bertz in Marmarth, North Dakota. Together they had three children: Robby, Sheila, and Shannon. Following their marriage, they moved to Dickinson, where Harold attended Dickinson State College and earned his teaching degree. He began a career in education that spanned many years and roles, eventually teaching art and science at Hagen Junior High and later building trades at Dickinson High School. He retired early from teaching in 1979. Harold later returned to education in New Town, ND for five years.

In 1978, Harold married Karen Madson Sticka, gaining a daughter Kelsey. In 1979, with Karen’s support, Harold began operating Voigt Construction full-time. His exceptional woodworking skills and craftsmanship led to the construction of many custom homes throughout western North Dakota. He continued contracting until his retirement.  In 2013 he married Susan Haakedahl.

Harold loved his family deeply. He was always ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or provide a little tough love when needed. He also had a playful side, making enough rubber band guns over the years to rival Smith & Wesson, much to the delight of his kids and grandkids. He and Karen spent countless hours traveling to watch their grandchildren participate in sports, concerts, and school activities—and you never quite knew if he’d show up as himself or as Hulk Hogan’s stunt double.

He had a special love for ice cream, a joy he shared with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whenever possible—most recently with his “little Hawks Point buddy.” Harold never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, about anything. Even as his dementia progressed, he continued to visit, joke, and connect with those around him.

Harold was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was always willing to help with church projects. He also loved volunteering at Badlands Ministries and especially enjoyed hearing the stories from Bible camps. He was also an avid supporter of the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks.

Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed music, going out to eat, having a beer with supper, fishing and camping, teaching his kids and grandkids how to drive (not always legally), spending time on the water, building model airplanes, traveling, and restoring or admiring old cars. Above all, he cherished his children and family.

He is survived by his children: Robby (LoAyne) Voigt; Sheila (Joel) Marshall; and Shannon (Joel) Horn and his wife Susan Voigt.

His grandchildren: Cassandra (Ryan) Allison and Aaron Voigt; Christ (Rachael) Craig, and Chad (Patience) Marshall; Michael (Jodi) Marsh, Derek (Hannah) Marsh, Sheena (Daniel) McLaren, and Angelea (Joshua) Richards; along with 19 great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Karen Voigt; daughter Kelsey Sticka; brothers Robert and Claire Voigt; sister Eunice Bratten; and many other relatives and close friends.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Hazen and the staff at Whispering Winds at Knife River Care Center. Over the past two years, your care and compassion meant more than words can express. Harold often said, “My girls take such good care of me,” and for that, we are deeply grateful.
