Helen Jane Hilz, 84, of Beulah, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2021 at Knife River Care Center. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. CDT Monday, November 8 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Dan Paulson officiating. Burial will follow at the Beulah City cemetery.
Visitation will occur one hour prior to the service at the church.
Helen was born January 27, 1937, at Krem, ND to Albert and Emma (Weigum) Miller. Her childhood years were spent growing up on the family homestead, playing with her sisters and kittens. She walked to country school as a child and eventually graduated from Hazen High School class of 1954.
On April 21, 1955, Helen married the love of her life, Helmuth Hilz. They were blessed with three children - Carey, Steve, and Carla. During their 66 years of marriage, they took numerous vacations, including their favorite destinations of Jamaica and Hawaii, road trips to craft shows, enjoyed many, many years at their lake home, and most everyone in Beulah was aware of their twice daily vehicle trips to keep an eye on the town of Beulah.
Helen enjoyed cooking, canning, and was an exceptional baker. Her treats were enjoyed by many. She had strong roots in her faith, and enjoyed sewing, tending to her beautiful outdoor flowers, traveling, reading, and always had time for a visit or chat on the phone. She always ensured the house was fully decorated for each holiday and that her family was enjoying a great meal, laughter and love. Her love for Elvis was second only to the love for her family, and anyone who entered the house was unable to leave without a tour of the “Elvis room.”
Helen is deeply and lovingly missed and survived by her husband, Helmuth “Doc” Hilz. Children, Carey VanPelt (Kevin Flaagan), Steve (Darlene) Hilz, and Carla Harildstad. Eight grandchildren, who she was so proud of, Erica (Aaron), Brittany, Lindsay (Nick), Heather (Dan), Steven (Lindsey), Joseph (Brooke), Daniel, and Eric, and six great-grandchildren, Austin, Kailynn, Taylor, Jackson, Mason and Luke.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Emma Miller; mother and father-in-law, Carl and Ida Hilz; sisters, Betty Mohl and Norma Richter; and son-in-law, Randy Van Pelt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Knife River Care Center or Sakakawea Medical Center.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
