Helmuth Pfennig, 98, of Beulah ND, passed away on May 3, 2023, at CHI in Bismarck, ND, surrounded by family. Services will be held on Monday, May 8, 2023 at 10:00 AM CDT at Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah, ND, with Pastor Kathleen Nygaard officiating. Burial will follow in the Beulah City cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT on Sunday at the Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah, ND.
Helmuth was born on April 21, 1925, north of Beulah, ND to John and Margaret (Koehler)
Pfennig. Helmuth was raised and educated north of Beulah, ND. On May 26, 1946, he married Lea Ida Benz at the parsonage of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church north of Hazen. Together they farmed north of Beulah for their entire married life. Helmuth enjoyed farming, loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, golfing, archery, trap shooting and working on vintage tractors. Helmuth and Lea enjoyed traveling the world and sharing many experiences with friends on trips and on their hunting expeditions.
Helmuth and Lea opened the Pfennig Wildlife Museum in 1994, showcasing exhibits from their
hunting travels. They both loved visiting with people who came to see the museum. In retirement, Helmuth enjoyed hunting deer with Lea, working on his vintage tractors, and visiting
and having coffee with friends and family.
Helmuth is survived by his daughters: Gwen Dinkins, Glenda (Jeff) Schoch, Kathy (Bill) Wahl,
Karen (Jim) Pundt and Kaylen (John) Kessler; Grandchildren: Firm (Kristen) Dinkins, Kana
(Lilly) Dinkins, Amy (Jeremy) Westman, Kelly (Kira) Melchior, Lisa (Scott) Ahlskog, Karla (Ryan) Hawke, Shanna (Josh) Haugen, Bobby Kessler, James (Jennifer Lyn) Kessler, Heather Kessler, Michelle (Clayton) Christie, and Jennifer Kessler; one step-granddaughter, ShaLee (Justin) Decker; and 14 great-grandchildren. Helmuth is survived by two sisters, Hulda Erdman of Bismarck, ND and Loraine Guelll of Tigard, Oregon.
Helmuth is preceded in death by his wife, Lea; his parents, Margaret and John; siblings,
Theophil, Jacob, Theodore, Friedebert, Johnnas and Walter Pfennig, Ernestina Morast, Irene,
Martha and Frieda Jose, Margaret Lang and his son-in-law, Danny Dinkins.
The family would like to thank the staff at Touchmark in Bismarck and the staff at the ICU unit at CHI in Bismarck.
The family requests that memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church, in Beulah, ND.
