Hertha (Stern) Sandau, 97, of Hazen, ND died peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Burial will follow at 1:00 PM CDT at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Hertha was born on August 14, 1925 to Steven and Catherine (Traxel) Stern at her family’s farm 12 miles north of Golden Valley, ND. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Hertha married Orlen Weisser in 1946. In 1948, Orlen passed away due to a construction accident while working on the Garrison Dam. The couple had a son, Rod, in 1948. On December 24, 1950, Hertha married Cliff Sandau at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Zap, ND. The couple added another son to their family, Glenn.

She had several clerking jobs in the Golden Valley and Hazen area, finishing her employment with Pioneer Retirement Home and Hanewald’s Furniture Store. Hertha was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and was active in the church’s Braille Group, Vesper Guild and in the prayer chain.

Hertha and Cliff enjoyed square dancing in their younger years. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and baking. One great memory her grandchildren have is of Cliff and Hertha taking them to Disney World. Hertha was a humble servant of God and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Hertha is survived by her sons, Rod (Carmen) Weisser and Glenn (LouAnn) Sandau; Mary Weisser, mother of Elizabeth (Weisser) Helgeson; granddaughters, Elizabeth (Weisser) Helgeson, Shana (Kirk) Vollmuth and Nikki (Ryan) Wolf; great-grandchildren, Brady and Zack Vollmuth, Haydn, Reese and Burke Wolf, and Ivy Helgeson; step-grandchildren, Janette (Phillip) Armstrong and Bernadette (Brett) Neilsen; step-great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ethan and Ella; her sisters, Bea Weigum and Ruby (Jerry) Bauer; and sister-in-law, Shirley Stern.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff; her parents; her first husband, Orlen; three brothers, Ray, Gottlieb and Erhardt; and four sisters, Erna, Pat, Anne and Louise.
