Irene (Breitling) Backfisch

Irene Backfisch, 98, of Glen Ullin, North Dakota passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Marian Manor, Glen Ullin, ND. Services will be held at 11:00 AM CDT on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley with Pastor J. Scott Pierson officiating. Burial will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Monday, October 30, 2023 at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Irene was born on August 18, 1925 at her home north of Dodge, ND. She was the sixth child of Emmanuel and Ernestine (Schimke) Breitling. Irene was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dodge. She married George Quast, Sr. and the couple had two children, Peggy and George, Jr. For many years, Irene worked at the Fairway Store and the Isaak Jassmann Mercantile. On July 4, 1970, she married Roland Backfisch at Garrison, ND by Pastor A. Miller. She went on to work for Roland in the Gamble Store and later Hardware Hank.

Irene loved her garden and flowers. She embroidered many sets of dishtowels for church and made the best pickles. She also loved to pencil pictures and read.

Irene moved to the Senior Suites in Hazen in 2013 and to Marian Manor in 2019.

She is survived by her children, George, Jr. (Donna) Quast and Peggy (Dennis) Schettler; her grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Van Horn, Dawna (Anthony) Richmond, Steph Isaak, Jason (Ashley Rettig) Quast and Brad Quast; her step-grandchildren, Myles (Stef) Schettler and Lacey (Travis) Kuhn; her great-grandchildren, Jordan and Ashley Richmond, Jacob and James Quast, Sydney Shepherd, Shaylee Cameron, Presley and Logan Schettler, Atley and Esley Kuhn; and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Roland; her parents; and her siblings, Elsie (Peter) Weisz, Hertha (John) Keller, Gertrude (Frank) Walker, Alma (Ernest) Isaak and Richard (Viola) Breitling.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
