Irene Berger, 85, of Stanton, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, CST, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Center with Fr. Stephen Foloranso officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, at the church in Center with a rosary starting at 6:30 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery following the service.
Irene was born the first of six children on February 23, 1937, to Anton and Philipena (Bosch) Hagel in Linton, ND. She was raised and educated in Emmons County, ND. According to one of Irene’s siblings, Irene was considered the favorite child. In 1959, her family moved to Bismarck. She worked as a waitress at the lighthouse café in Bismarck until 1964. On May 2, 1964, she married Robert Berger at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck. Together they moved to Stanton where they have since lived, farming and ranching.
Irene was very active in her church, including, helping with funerals, cleaning the church, and helping with fall dinners. Irene loved to garden and raise chickens. She loved to cook and bake and was known for her fabulous homemade buns. She had a fondness for animals, especially cats and dogs. She enjoyed crafts, especially embroidery. Raising and spending time with her family was very important to her. Together, Irene and Bob raised two wonderful young men who were her pride and joy!
Irene is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert of Stanton, one son, Anthony (Mandy) Berger of Stanton, one sister, Donna (Ken) Thiede of Bismarck, one brother-in-law, Joe Olzweski of Bismarck and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by, one son Brian, three sisters, Sally Olzweski, Alice (Tom) Boehm, one infant sister, and one brother, Ronald Hagel.
