James Sigman Obituary

James (Jim) G. Sigman (79) of Hazen, ND passed away at his home on August 7, 2021 surrounded by his family after a long hard fought battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:00 am CDT on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm CDT at Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah, ND with Pastor Dan Paulson officiating.

Jim was born on October 14, 1941 in Beulah, ND to Harley and Vona (Clark) Sigman. Jim grew up and attended grade school in Beulah, junior high in Granville, ND and high school in Oakland California. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in 1959 at the young age of 17 and was honorably discharged in 1962.

Jim married Ruby Dschaak in 1963 and had two sons Dennis and Dorian through this union.

On June 4, 1982 Jim married the love of his life, Peggy Kohler. They recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with one daughter, Jaime. Jim said many times how different it was raising a daughter compared to a son.

Jim worked at Basin Electric Leland Olds Station as a shift supervisor. After 30 years of employment Jim was fortunate to take early retirement at the age of 53.

Jim was an active outdoorsman. If there was a fish to catch or a bird to hunt you could find Jim close by. Many knew if they wanted to know where the fish were biting to call “Sigman.” The neighborhood liked to say “Nobody could fillet a fish like Jim.” Whether fishing, hunting or shooting archery, Jim achieved numerous state titles.  Jim always said he was in God’s church when he was outdoors. “What could be more beautiful than watching the sun rise while lying in a stubble field waiting for the geese to fly in.”

Jim loved sports and competition. He enjoyed showing his hometown school spirit by attending Hazen sporting events. “GO BISON!”

Jim was a kind, gentle and an affectionate individual and would do anything for his family and friends. Jim had a true passion and love for his family and country. Jim or “Jimbo” to many of his daughter’s friends, thought of him as a second dad. He always provided advice and words of wisdom whether it was asked for or not!

In recent years, Jim enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Emarie and Cason. Together they loved playing a loud and crazy game of hide and go seek, rough housing and sharing in “Papa’s” love for fishing.

Jim is survived by his wife Peggy; daughter, Jaime (Casey) Sabot, Bismarck, ND, sons, Dorian (Karen Petti, fiancé) Stanton, ND, Dennis (Bernadette) Bismarck, ND; five grandchildren, Emarie and Cason Sabot, Alexandra Sigman, Tylor and Megan Sigman; three great grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Janice) Sigman; sisters, Lila (Jim) Bosch and Wally Mae Schneider and his Loyal Dog, Abe; numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to give special thanks to their close friends and family and all of their neighbors.
