James "Jim" DuBois Obituary

James (Jim) William DuBois, 85, of Hazen, passed peacefully at his home on November 5, 2020 with his family at his side.  Private services will be held at English Lutheran Church in Hazen with Pastor Justin Johnson officiating.  Private burial will be at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Jim was born on November 28, 1934 at Cochran, WI the fifth child of Clyde and Ruby (Stouff) DuBois.  His youth was spent in the Red Wing, MN area until relocating to North Dakota with his father and a sister during the construction of the Garrison Dam.  He graduated from Riverdale High School in 1952.  He served his country in the Navy as a SeaBee for six years stationed overseas.  He married Karen Bohrer on August 9, 1957 and they had two daughters.

Jim instilled and modeled love for God, his family and his community. Jim and Karen raised their family primarily in Hazen while Jim worked at Union State Bank.  He fondly recalled his relationships with customers and co-workers.  Jim was active in the community as a Boy Scout leader, Bison Booster charter member, one of the original volunteer ambulance EMT’s, and service on the Hazen city commission.  He truly enjoyed kids and opening the gym on Sunday afternoons, keeping the basketball score clock and down marker at football games for many years.  Jim was active in his church as financial secretary and later in life embraced the opportunity to serve on the call committee. Jim and Karen left Hazen in 1988 for many adventures, returning to Hazen in 2011.

Jim was a very loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather giving freely of his time and love with a fun spirit and underlying joy.  He orchestrated many family vacations, camping trips, and “family parties” complete with mock soft-shoe and lots of pan-popped popcorn!  Jim loved to hear and tell a good joke and seemingly had one for every occasion.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Karen; daughters, Lora Wallender of Hazen and Holly (Martin) Casillas of Illinois; grandsons, Phil (Jen) Wallender of Hazen and Paul (Rachel) Wallender of Billings, MT; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Garret, Presley, and Aven; sisters-in-law, Joyce DuBois and Linda Bohrer, both of MN; special nephew, Marty DuBois of MT; and many other special nephews and nieces.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Brian Wallender; siblings, Don DuBois, Jerry DuBois, Darlene Tilton and Barb Gallagher; brother-in-law, Bill Bohrer; and niece Patty Mosley.

The family would like to thank the Sakakawea Hospice team for their compassionate care and concern for Jim.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Sakakawea Hospice.

Jim always said he wanted to leave this life saying “Man, what a ride!”, and he did!’
